New carpet bolt holes

I'm installing new carpeting and wondering if anyone has ideas how to best cut holes in the new carpeting that will line up for seat bracket bolts to go through to floor pan?

Re: New carpet bolt holes

I would stick an awl through the well positioned carpet from below. Then, I would cut a square in the carpet, around the awl, with a razor blade.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

i did the same thing with a sharpened screwdriver.from below.

works well

i cut a round hole but either way,i cut it large enough to where you have a little movement for adjustment on the carpet(incase somehow you had it over to one side too far) but small enough it can be hidden underneath the seat bracket.

mine were like1/2- 3/4 round holes

Pretty much the same as above. I used the point on my test light from the bottom

4" x 4" for each bolt hole.

j/k

Cut it just large enough for the bolt to go through.

I've always used a redhot awl with no cutting.

I just did this. Used an awl, no cutting required.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

Great input. Really like the red hot awl that will burn/melt the backing which hopefully will be just enough to allow the bolt to pass through easily. Good stuff guys...thanks!

This is what I did. I used a awl to find the hole from underneath then I used a soldering iron from the top and melted the hole in the carpet.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

I asked my friend who does upholstery to help install my carpet a few weeks back and he just made a small X cut pattern for each bolt hole.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

I located the hole locations from below with an awl, marked the locations with chalk then used a 3/4" hole saw IN REVERSE so it didn't pull the carpet "yarn". My carpet is ACC with mass backing. I made something like 24 holes total. That's largely due to the fact that I have buckets and console. No problems.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

@FirstOwner69 - I can't wait until Monday to try the reverse hole saw. Seems way too simple. I'll report back on success.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

Be careful if you have loop carpet it can snag and will run right across the carpet and there's no fix for that . just use a single edge razor blade after locating the hole as mentioned above you only need a 1/2 inch hole .

There's a risk I suppose, but I was able to drill all 24 holes in my ACC 80/20 loop carpet with mass backing without snagging the loops. The key is the reverse rotation and, I suppose, a sharp hole saw. Here's a link to an ACC You Tube video that demos the technique at the 4:45 mark.

Put bolts in floor with no carpet. Put in carpet. Feel bolts. Cut carpet.

Re: New carpet bolt holes

Simply use an inexpensive soldering gun and melt/burn thru from the bottom. Works great.

Soldering iron is your friend. Read this post - works like a charm!

Re: New carpet bolt holes

Although I used the reverse rotation hole saw, I like the soldering iron idea. Has anyone used one with the ACC mass backed carpet?

Re: New carpet bolt holes

Is there anything wrong with a .20 cent single edge razor blade ? It only takes 5 minutes to bolt in a bench seat .
