Eaton Rear End ID Question

Hi Guys, I just bought a 71 3/4 ton 4x4 with 350/sm465/np205. Checked the F & R ends today and wanted to ask if anyone knows the factory codes for axles. from what I can see, the code on the Eaton is TJH and followed by G 1172. From reading some other posts,I think the TJH is correct for 71 but have no idea what the G 1172 is for. Also, what's in the red square?

Thanks for any help you have to offer, Scott

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

The item in the red square is -- if I get the terminology correct -- the pinion preload bolt. It is on all HO72s (1 ton) and some HO52s (3/4 ton).

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

Thanks Stocker, I had read about the pinion preload bolt in other posts but wasn't sure if that's what it was. I need to get the ratio code from the axle tomorrow. I thought for sure it would be 4:56 in the Eaton. But, I looked at the Dana 44 in front and it has a 4:09 ratio tag on it. I thought the 4:09 only came with the automatics.

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

What little I know about them, 4.10 seems to be a very common ratio. Easy enough for you to verify though.

looks like mine. Eaton axle. Apparently there are not many parts for these, and it is a non-posi. so I will be swapping the thing out before long.

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

I'm glad I kept the HO52 in my K20 - it was rebuilt and parts weren't hard to locate. Two weeks ago a local parts store had shoes and seals for the HO72 in my C30 sitting on the shelf.

Here is a thread I posted with the charts if any one else needs to look up the codes.

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

My father in law has an eaton with a Detroit locker set up (I believe). I was thinking about picking it up, are these hard to come by with the locker? Might use it in a project of mine.

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

Thanks LockDoc! Do you have a chart that shows Dana 44 BOM numbers. I located the #'s from mine and can't seem to match them up with any of the #'s listed. My BOM is 603317-8. Along with 4 1 1A4 to the left of the BOM and 4 7 1A8 above the BOM. I've seen this number here in a different post but nothing in Dana material. Any help identifying would be great.

Thanks, Scott

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

if you find a place that has the locker parts let me know. I was told they are very hard to find. id much rather pull the guts out and make it a posi than swap axels.

yeah, the brakes and such are availible. I am talking the actual gear parts are hard to find.

No new gear parts to my knowledge either. I was fortunate to get a NoSPin locker from a member on the parts board.

Re: Eaton Rear End ID Question

I have some charts saved in my saved files but i'm at work at the moment, i'll try and get it posted here spmetime soon.

Most parts are still avalable with the exception of the ring and ponion, last i chacked tho the bearings inside the diff were really expensive, but the eatons are nearly indestructable.
