my son's flintstone long 1964 fleetside C10.

My father-in-law gave my son a 1964 long bed fleetside C10. I am wondering how we should attack the floorboards. Both sides have rust areas. One area on the passenger side someone tried to fiberglass the floorboard.

What we are planning to do is make the inside look newish while probably doing some minor repairs. He has the truck almost stripped down. We have an engine/transmission we plan on using.

Some upgrades. We got a deluxe steering wheel and some other parts.

Who should I buy the floorboards from? We did find a C20 but not sure if that cab would work with his truck.

Its going to be his truck so nothing really fast or in perfect shape. I will post some pictures.

Also is it worth it to mount the gas tank outside of the cab under the bed of the truck?

Neat truck!

I've been using my 64 C10 as a daily driver for 19 years. Having the fuel tank behind the seat/in the cab has never been a problem, nuisance, or issue. Just my opinion, but I would probably spend my money somewhere else if I were you.

Re: my son's flintstone long 1964 fleetside C10.

We have a spare fuel cell from a race car. Not really cost anything except need to run an electric fuel pump.

Right now I am more concerned with the floorboards. Not sure how to tackle that problem other than buying new floor patch panels and dive into the rust.

I have an old corvette where the gas tank is behind the seat. I do not smell hear or see any fuel. I remember as a kid my dad's 70 ford pickup would slosh around.

I keep telling him its about wants and needs. He needs good brakes, tires and shocks. He wants a nice stereo and vintage air. He will have old school air conditioning. We all remember that.

Congrats on the truck.

60-63 and 64-66 C10-C30 Cabs are all the same so you can get patch panels from any. Swapping cabs is also an option assuming you have no legal issues with VIN's and such.

You can get patch panels at Brothers, Top Banana, LMC, or www.Truckandcarshop.com (I bought mine at truck hence the web site link). For the most part, they all use patch panels from the same suppliers

I would move the fuel tank personally. I never did like having the gas tank inside the cab with me. Never thought that was particularly smart of the designers in the first place. Lots of options for moving, some easy and some not so easy. Depends on if you want your fuel filler in the bed floor or not.

Check the FAQ, there are lots of helpful links and how-to's and if you cant find what you need there, then this forum has the expertise to help with just about anything. I've never seen a question that someone here didnt have an answer for.

Once you start, start a build thread and keep the pic's coming. You'll find we are pic junkies around here

Looks like a decent truck to work with......and it has one of my favorite wheels too

I would just purchase the patch panels needed to repair your existing cab. Abrasive blasting is the best way to clean up the sheetmetal to see exactly what you have.

Re: my son's flintstone long 1964 fleetside C10.

Now to add more information... Last night we went and saw a C30 duelie with a 292 granny four speed. The truck runs and drives. It does not have the bed on the back. The brakes work. Both trucks have clean titles with non-ops. The person wants 1000.00 for C30. I know he wants the C10 style suspension. Now, it has me thinking of ways to make this work for my son. 292 would be a cool engine to hot rod out lots of torque. The cab has a little rust on the driver side outside area of the door seals. Other than that it is a solid truck. We would have to do something but would have both titles. I do not see my son driving around in a duelie. Wouldn't be cool to add an offy and a better head flowing head plus a header onto a 292. Bigger cam... Lots of ideas in my head. I know he can sell off all of the duplicate parts to get some money back.

The passenger side floorboard looks fine with the C30. Each door has some dents which I can work out. The cab does not look like there is any bondo or work done to it.

Let me know what you all think... Since I have to make a decision today whether or not to get the truck.

The transmission is a SM420. I think it had a transmission brake on it.

What is the best way to tell if it is 292 or a 250? The engine mounts are staggered.

Maybe we just build him a C30??? Is 1000.00 a good deal for a running C30? The frame is solid. There is no bed on the back.

I would say YES, that would be a good deal for a running truck with no major rust issues. You could pick a bed up later if you choose.

BUY IT! lol! And the easiest way to tell a 250 from a 292 is that the 292 will have the fuel pump in the center and the 250 will have the fuel pump up front behind the dizzy. All ya need to know. And hot rodding 292's is right up my ally so let me know what ya wanna do! Check out my build thread Project Two Tone for info on my 292.

Re: my son's flintstone long 1964 fleetside C10.

We will get some pictures of the truck when we go and pick it up. Funny part it was used on a Christmas tree farm. It had 74k miles not sure if it was 174k or more... Got it cheap enough so maybe we can do a cool dually truck instead of a fleetside long bed C10.

Any suggestions... How could we make it into a nice riding truck and not a "truck".

Take out leafs in the back???
Replace front end suspension???

My 64 GMC 3/4 ton has coils up front and leafs in the rear. Rides really nice with a 915 pound engine up front. lol They really aren't that bad. Stiffer shocks and new coils for up front would help Alot. Tight steering and an alignment would help to. Putting some weight on that rear end would help keep it from bouncing all over. Maybe a 500 pound flat bed. lol

Re: my son's flintstone long 1964 fleetside C10.

If you want to drive that C30 much you will likely want to change the rear differential. My guess would be it will have 4.57 gears or lower. Not really highway friendly. An overdrive trans would help but upgrading to a 14 bolt or a Dana 70 with 3.73 or even 4.10 gears will be even better.

Adding a bed to the rear will definitely make a difference in ride quality. If you don't plan to haul much weight, you can take out a few leafs if needed. But I doubt it will ride as nice as a C10 with trailing arms and coils.

The front can be upgraded to disc brakes just the same as with a C10 or C20. However you will have to change the entire suspension including the crossmember as the C30's have the same LCA shafts as the C20's do.
