My first truck: Bertie. 1965 c20 long step

Hey guys!

New to the 60-66 world, but my father has a 72 (see build thread: Trusty Rusty) that I learned alot about these trucks from. We've had that truck since 1998, so since I can remember basically. I moved out this summer and I've been missing working on that truck, so I figured it was time to find a project.

Then i stumbled upon this beauty in a field behind a motorcycle shop without the bed on it. It is a 1965 c20 long step with a 230 and a granny 4 speed. I was in love with it! Another heavy duty, rusty, hugger orange truck to add to the family. $550 later and the title was signed over to me and I had the truck towed to my work (since it didn't run). The day after it got to my work, I took the carb that was on it off and cleaned it out since the truck wouldn't idle at all. I don't believe this carb was originally on this truck considering its a rochester monojet and it appears to be off a 75. I also ran an electric fuel pump since the cam lobe was too worn out to drive a mechanical one.

So now the truck runs. Immediate plans include replacing the tires, replacing the fuel tank, and finding a solution for the bed, since it Isn't held on by anything and is severely rotten.

pulled the truck out and got the bed on. sitting next to the daily



one cool thing i like about this truck: it still has the original dealer badge from a dealer here in smyrna Tn, around the nashville area. i think its really cool that it has been in the nashville area all this time!




so once i got the truck back to work I scraped all this crap out of the carb!

Does anyone know if the fuel tank out of '72 will fit in the '65? It would be awesome if we could reuse some of the parts from our '72 build.

So yesterday I went outside after i clocked out of work (since the truck is being stored at the shop i work at for now ) to pull it in to bleed the brakes to see if it helps with braking. truck wont start. frick.

after some diagnosing and disassembly, i found out the BRAND NEW precision electric fuel pump is no longer working.

so today i ordered a new rear mount top fill fuel tank, new mechanical fuel pump, and some other little bobs and bits. hopefully that solves my issues! fingers crossed!

So all the new parts came in! boy was i excited. nice shiny new parts.

so the first step was to remove the bed. since the truck wasnt running i had to use my vw to pull the truck around the back of the shop to where the bed would reside once it came off, and then pull the truck back to its parking spot. the little turbo golf made light work of it

so then we had to chop out all this crap that one of the PO's welded in to support the massive bumper and hitch. out came the acetylene torch



I also noticed while we have the bed off that there are what appear to be these massive helper leafs. anyone have info on these?



so then yesterday a buddy of mine and I went to the shop to get the new fuel pump and tank installed, and then run some fuel line.

sometimes you gotta just hop in there and get er done

unfortunately it was late and dark by the time we got the tank in, lines run, and the truck running, so you'll have to wait for pics on that.

Anyone have a good diy on how to make a fuel filler neck on this rear mount tank?

hey guys! been a while since I've been on. been dealing with some life stuff lately, and haven't had much time for the truck till the last few days. it was up for sale for about a month and a half, but then i got it running again so that i could move it out of the shop i worked at that i am leaving, and realized how much i really love this thing.



so out came the friends truck and uhaul trailer. boy was it embarrassing being pulled behind a ford! But the newer truck made light work of it.




so i finally got it home, rebuilt the carb (again) and did some fine tuning. truck still doesnt feel 100%, but its something. and then we rode around in it for a bit! truck definitely needs alot. needs the drivetrain properly sorted, theres alot of shaking. and definitely needs brakes! next plan is to lower it and make a wood flatbed.
