Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

wow, i noticed it too! didnt think theyd put it back behind the seat, seeming as they had just moved them below the cab on these bodystyle trucks. i woulda thought theyd just put the fuel tank on the passenger side and the toolbox on the driver.

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

I`d like to see the other side of that truck and see if it has a factory tank. Perhaps the owner added the in cab tank as an aux. tank?

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

My 73 C20 had the factory tool box with the fuel filler on the passenger side. I did not travel too far on one 20 gallon tank of gas, considering it was a 454/400. I guess dual tanks would not work with the factory tool box.

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

Operative word is "had". My 73 went to the scrapyard 12 years ago, after a coworker got the 454 and 400 out of it. I actually swapped out the bed with one from a 78 about 5 years before that, since the stock bed rusted so bad it was barely hanging on the frame. My 73 was not something anyone would want to take a picture of.

Yes, there should be a factory tank on the other side. The passenger side was the standard location for the single gas tank from 73 to 80 whether the truck had the toolbox or not. I'm guessing a factory aux. tank probably wasn't available with the toolbox option. So I think you're right about that in cab tank being an owner-added aux. tank.

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

A very old thread, but it caught my attention when googling for a fleetside toolbox. I found a company that makes them....or should a say made them back in 1985 check this newspaper add and spot the toolbox in the middle to the left:

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

That looks like the same across the bed toolboxes available today, not a factory made in to the bedside toolbox.

This is what your picture is of: http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Delta/940000_HR.jpg

Re: Factory fleetside toolbox?

I actually own 2 of these toolboxes. One is the complete set up the other is just the outer panel. I had a REALLY hard time finding them. I found them a year apart. They do seem to have had rust issues.

just fyi.. im just starting the restoration of it and any help or ideas where to find parts would be appreciated.

Contact member Lockdoc for mechanism, he sells them occasionally.
Box is not rare, many ordered between 69-72, mostly 71-72. More common on 3/4 tons as they were ordered as work trucks, although I have seen a few on C10s. I have one on my 72 custom camper, but it's a separate RPO from the camper stuff. It was a common combo though, folks that planned camping needed tool space.
