How far will my 454 rotate?

I'm trying to wedge a 454 in my '67 k10. I found a set of shorty headers that will work, but the passenger side is about 1/4" away from the frame rail and the oil pan has about 1/4" clearance from the crossmember. I'm using new rubber motor mounts and poly transmission mounts. How much can I expect this stock 454 to move around? Will I have clearance issues?

I don't think you will have a problem with that. If you do just put Poly mounts in the front too, then you won't have any movement at all and you won't have to worry about it....

Re: How far will my 454 rotate?

Thanks for the reply. I just remember working on several cars where the engine rotated about 10 degrees, but those mounts may have been shot. Yes, I probably should have gone with poly engine mounts but at the time $12 for the rubber mounts seemed like a better deal than $95 for the poly...

Didn't they used to install short chains or cables to prevent rotation in case of a failed mount? Might work as cheap insurance for you if you don't change to poly mounts.

Yes they did. They were cable. It was a recall type thing, when the mounts broke the engine would shift and hold the throttle open....

And if I'm not mistaken, that's one reason for the switch from throttle linkage to throttle cable.

Re: How far will my 454 rotate?

I'm not so worried about the engine breaking free of it's mounts as I am of having the headers hit the frame rails if the engine torques 1/4" to either side. Although the thought of the throttle sticking open does scare me. Had that on a 2.2l s10, I'd hate to have a 7.4l run away from me

Should only be a problem if you have old-style throttle linkage..... not a problem with a throttle cable. Yeah, that could be exciting!

Re: How far will my 454 rotate?

GM actually notched the frame on both sides for extra clearance for the BBC you can see it on my 68 that came with a 396 in it.

Is this true? I've had trucks with both big and small blocks and never noticed, and never heard that before on the board.

One of us will learn something new on this one!
