Which bench seat?

Hey guys I've got a question about what bench seat to use? I've got a 67 c10 with a green interior and the seat needs a new cover/foam. The seat folds forward and works ok. Or should I use the 72 bench seat I have that doesn't fold forward and also needs a new cover/foam? I guess I'm asking what is typically the more desirable bench? Also it seems that I can only find a green seat cover for 70-72?

folding one would be more desirable to me at least especially if you ever relocated the gas tank and want to use the space for storage/stereo/whatever.

I've had both but I remember reading about 72s having better more comfortable foam...?
Maybe you can cannibalize it with a folding back and the 72 foam bottom?

I originally planned on just keeping the folding 67 seat but since I can't order a nice looking green seat cover in the style I like maybe I will just go 72 seat? I don't have any plans on relocating the tank so I guess it's no big deal if it doesn't fold. Ahhh decisions, decisions! Lol

Things to keep in mind, some seats are spring/foam seats and some are full foam seats, the way to tell is when you look at the bottom of the seat, if the wires are flat from front to back then its a full foam seat that has a good 6" of molded foam, if the springs arch upward from front to back going above the seat frame its a spring/foam seat and it has about a 2.5" foam cusion. the full foam is a plusher seat in the long run but i have read a post where a taller guy complained the new foam sat him up too high.

If you need foam replacement the only foam avalable in reproduction is the full foam seat, the other would need to be cut to fit from a place that sells foam or an upholstery shop.

Per your question i guess thats up to you which seat you choose, if you store stuff behind the seat the folding seat may be a benifit, manufactures had to stop making seats that way for crash safety reasons, if i had not already recovered my current seat recovered i may have went the folding route myself.

I have a 67 with the folding seat and talked to truckseats on here he says his covers will work with our seats . from the picture post of his on here he can get any design you could want I think . I know as soon as I can get the cash together I'm going to give him a shot I want to keep the folding seat on mine

Are you set on a stock seat? If not the 1988-1994 seats are easy to mount in these trucks. Here's a picture of the seat I had recovered for my jimmy.

I would personally go with the folding option because even with the in-cab tank there's always something that gets put behind the seat.

I just picked up a 70 CST and when I took the seat out to clean out the tank I noticed it doesn't fold forward. Does anyone know if this is correct for my truck?

You can modify the newer seat to fold by removing the bolt on the passenger side by the hinge, fold seat forward and replace the bolt. You will need to modify the seat cover in order for this to work as the stock cover covers the arm attaching back to the bottom.

Oh Man thats perfect!!! Even the colour! I'm not set on stock seat at all. What do you have to do to modify it to fit? Also is that seat cover something you can buy for that year or did you get yours custom made that colour?

Well, I'm using it in a jimmy so I can't say for sure how it would mount in a truck due to the gas tank. I moved the seat as far forward on the frame as I could and then drilled holes in the floor where the bracket holes ended up being. This leaves a lot of rearward adjustment. I also welded in reinforcing plates underneath where the bolt holes are. you can get the idea how it sits on the floor from this pic from before recover.

I took it in to a local upholstery shop and told them what I wanted and they did a pretty good job. It ended up costing me $500.00. They got the houndstooth from this place; http://www.yourautotrim.com/hobl5.html

I will say the shop said it was a challenge to do it. The seats are heat molded from the factory so removing the old cover has to be done carefully with lots of steam. I actually got the idea from this thread;

I won't use the seat mounted seat belts that came with the newer seat, I feel safer using the original seat belts.

The 67 is a desirable seat because it was the only year that folded. New government crash test standards required that if a seat folded that it "locked" for the 1968 model year and GM figured it was cheaper to add a screw and make the seat rigid.

The problem (as noted above) no one makes a cover kit for it, you have to have one custom made.

I stupidly tossed my 67's folding seat like 18 years ago. I couldn't find a cover for it, so I swapped in a later seat (71/72-ish).
