Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
I'd say you need to clarify and expand on what exactly you need help with.
Someone to do the welding. Advise on cutting the openings Different design of tub? That doesn't look bad though. Raised floor or hump over axle area? Or ???????????????????????????????

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
I think he is wondering how to attach the tub to the side of the bed... maybe alternative to welding?

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
The point! It's much easier to clamp and weld on some flanges on those tubs and bolt them to the bed side. You can keep the tubs from warping due to size and shape, can't say the same for the bed side. The flanges were pretty large on the stock type I used but I cut them down and re drilled the holes. The outer fender hides the nuts and putting the flanges on the inside of the tub hides the bolts.

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
I'd weld on some flanges for bolting before risking welds warping the bed sides. Will help keep the radius of the tub, welding to the bed side can pull it out of round. Also makes them easy remove in the future in case things change.

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
In a race car all we use is clear silicone. It's surprisingly strong and seals the sam. Good bead of silicone on the underside / inside, a thin smear of seam sealer around the outside of the seam (silicone doesn't paint well)
I've used it on steel tubs more than once and it holds surprisingly well.

I second this, tubs are so hard to weld all the way around without warping noticeably anyway. When I raised the bed floor in my old minitruck, I only tack welded it a couple places and then used a bead of F-26 construction adhesive then wiped with a damp paper towel. it had the consistency of seam sealer and took paint, and last time I saw the truck had lasted 10 years.

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
Rick, cut a strip of 19 gauge 2 or 2 and a half inches wide a little longer than the wheel tub circumference.
Bend it lengthwise 90 degrees with 1 inch on one side and 1 1/2 inches on the other. Use a stretcher to stretch the metal on the side that will go on the bed side. This will begin to curve the piece to fit your tub. It takes some practice and there are some tricks to make easier. I will see if I can find a link. Or go to metalmeet.com and search using a shrinker stretcher. Cut the arc of the tub in the bed side and the piece you made could attach on the inside of the bed, covering and finishing the connection. Or, if you cut accuratly the bed side flange could be on the outside of the bed. I would drill holes on the tub side of the flange before stretching. Then I would drill holes on the bed side of the flange after stretching. It might make it easier with stretching consistently if the piece doesnt have holes yet. Then I would plug weld the made flange to the bedside and the wheel tub. Unless you have a spotwelder with long arms. Space the holes equal distance. You can grind the welds smooth for a good look. |

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
It is the same idea I used on the toe boards to flange the edge. Pic was buried in my too ginormous build thread. I ran the shrinker on the part of the flange on the toe board.

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
the metal is thick on the bed sides
you'd really have to try hard to warp the metal welding to it don't overthink this, just weld them in these are my wheel tubs; once i had the shape, i cut it out with an $10 electric jig saw i used the cut out as the wheel tub by welding some 3'' wide strips of 14 gauge metal

Re: Looking for help installing wheel tubs
I like that look better than my strip idea. It is what I did to reinstall my tubs.
