Ways to do a black wood finish

Guys the wood in my 66 is needing redone as the urathane is looking bad. Thinking of doing a new set in pine to replace the oak and doing a factory looking black finish. Truck is a daily driver so looking for a finish that will weather good and last a while. Suggestions?

Yes, Go to the Mar-K page and they have a section on preserving the bed board. In short. 2 coats of Por-15 let dry between coat, then follow with a 2 coats of Behr Exterior grade semi-gloss black, paint all sides.

I used this from Ace hardware. I put 2 coats, but more would get it darker. I think it looks kinda like factory.

I'd think pine, being a soft wood, wouldn't hold up well in the bed of a truck--even one that doesn't see much use.

Pine is all the factory used.

I have a Mar-K pine bed I installed in 2000 . All I used were 4 coats of rustoleum thinned for the first two coats , last two straight out of the can. Looks as good as the day it was done, Pine is still very nice. Pine will last just fine if taken care of, even in our damp climate here in Wi.. I just finished another pine bed using MAr Ks technique and it looks great.

All pine is not equal. White pine is soft and wouldn't last for beans as it is prone to decay. Southern Yellow pine (like the factory used) is hard as nails and resists rot very well.

Thanks for the info guys. Jon that does look really nice. I live in a house that was built in 1905 out of all yellow pine. The stuff is now hard as concrete and still going strong. Southern yellow pine is what I plan to use.

my boards were yellow pine if i remember right.

I tried something different, but im very happy with the results, mar-k oak kit with three coats of ebony stain then two coats of boiled lin seed oil on all sides. I must say the quality of mar-k is top notch!

I do it to rifle stocks.

Nice effect but how would it work on pine? The how do you protect the wood from the ellements?

FWIW... linseed oil thinned with turpentine, colored with lamp black.



My results were an opaque black. In daylight it appears more like dark grey. I'm happy with the results.

BTW the wood in mine was weathered ply to start.
