Re: wow, really? part prices
Use searchtempest.com or another craigslist search website for parts. I am sure you will stumble upon a tach dash for cheap eventually. I used to think I wanted one but I have an automatic so I don't really need one.

Re: wow, really? part prices
I can see paying someone a realistic value for a used part that has to be restored for reliable and aesthetic purposes.
It is always the guy "Man you ain't gunna pay me what its worth?" Or the more commen one "I am doing you a favor at that price." Who is out looking for a fool and a sap. However I cannot see paying 500 bills for a tach dash that would be in good shape and putting it into a vehicle that the SPID does not support as ORIGINAL?????? Sure its cool and nice and an upgrade. Yet prices still continue to climb, there is always available supply and demand rules. 45 years and these things are still trucking. There is at least 5 running rigs in my neck of the woods within a 1 mile radius. Who is kidding who? |

Re: wow, really? part prices
My most expensive purchases have been $500 for an NOS PleasureLift PowerPack and $1500 for NOS hubcaps (GMC, 8-bolt, one-year-only chrome option).
I put a tach dash into my truck even though the SPID doesn't call for it. I could have strapped one to to the column with a hose clamp, but there's value in doing it right and clean as well, so you have to figure that in the price. You could also cut your own dash and order the PCB for $38 or whatever. Not trivial, but not rocket science either.

Re: wow, really? part prices
I've marveled at this board's own internal market driving the prices up on things such as tow hooks for example. Its interesting to watch the prices soar as people see other people finding buyers at the ridiculous prices. I also take note when a repop of a desirable piece becomes available. Everyone with the OEM or NOS piece tries to unload it quickly at the high price before it becomes common knowledge that a cheaper repop is available. Its all good in my book. I've been on both sides. I am just grateful that this board exists to give me access to the parts and the people who have them

Re: wow, really? part prices
They have the 5K tach kits to add a tach on ebay for $239.00, still expensive but half the price of a tach dash.

Re: wow, really? part prices
I have said this before but I own a 1962 vw microbus and if you haven't noticed they are pricey now. There was a desirable model sold at auction for over 200k. So needless to say it has ruined the hobby for some of us. I have recently decided to sell it and put the money into my truck. But I will add the most valuable and hard to find parts for my bus were given to me at shows and swap meets where friends were made.

Smaller and simpler pieces like Two Hooks and bumper guards might get reproduced; hubcaps and air lift won't. I bet Tachs and Tach Dashes were pretty pricey until reproduced too, but that's before my time on these trucks (before restoring them anyway).

I would argue that there are plenty of large and complex pieces being repoped besides tow hooks and bumper guards. Just open any catalogue. And I wouldn't be surprised to see hubcaps for 67-72 trucks being added soon, judging by the demand for 3/4 ton dog dish caps, and the prices they are currently commanding. I don't think air lift kits/components have anything to do with the cost of OEM or repop pieces for our trucks, as they don't fall into either category. |

Re: wow, really? part prices
You can pick up column mounted tachs for pennies, and there's a blank spot right in the center of a gauge cluster. Problem solved.
![]() I think tachs were pretty rare in pickups and went to 4k in big trucks so real ones will often be repro and of questionable quality. |

Re: wow, really? part prices
Same thing happened in the muscle car world. Just took the truck sector a while longer to catch up. Funny thing is, many of these trucks are more rare than many muscle cars now since they were used, abused, drove hard, and put away wet.

2500 buys you a rotted field truck thats either been sitting years or a forgotten project where half the parts are missing or of no use. And these are longbed prices remember. Back in the late 80s and early 90s these trucks were 400-1200 all day long and were drivers right out of gate. You states side guys should browse some Canadian classifieds and you'll feel a whole lot better about the prices you face lol. |

Re: wow, really? part prices
It's all subject to the laws of supply & demand. Consider the following:
A replacement master cylinder for my 74 VW Super Beetle is about $20 the last time I checked. A replacement master cylinder for my 71 VW Fastback is about $210. I chose to rebuild the MC instead. I can't find a seal kit ANYWHERE!!! Makes one wonder where the manufacturers of new MCs get their seals! Needless to say, the Fastback is still sitting on jack stands. One of the downsides with market driven prices, is the lack of knowledge on part of the buyer. All too often with VW components, being air cooled and all, buyers don't realize they are choosing an inferior product, because it's cheaper. When they have problems, they dump the "stupid" car on another unsuspecting buyer, or the junk yard. If this cycles repeats too frequently, the superior, more costly part, disappears from the market entirely. Fortunately, I have not experienced the same problems with Chevy parts. However, it must be noted, my truck's in rather good condition consider its age! ![]() Regards, Mike

Re: wow, really? part prices
Look to the Chevelles and Novas. There was a time NO ONE would consider building a (gasp !) 4 door Chevelle or Nova or heaven forbid even a Tri-five. Seeing more and more of these at the local shows. Good buildable units are drying up and two door hardtops and coupes are going for crazy money. A lot of that is due to the Barrett/Jackson syndrome where anybody with a rusted out two door anything thinks the rotted out hulk is at least worth $4 or 5K.
"It's gotta be worth $30 - $35 grand when it's done" No mention of the $25 to $30 grand spent to get it there. ![]()

Re: wow, really? part prices
Hey mtdave2, do you remember how much you paid for that pair of N.O.S. painted hubcaps for your Longhorn you got from me? Now we have people come here for the sole purpose of tapping into this valuable pool of 67-72 parts buyers to get all they can for their parts. You never see them socializing elsewhere or concerned with making any friends, other than steady customers spending good money. Just here to sell parts or beat prices down so they can make more money selling them on Ebay.

I live in a small house like that and I raised my three children here, just like my parents did for me, my brother, and five sisters. We were so happy we never knew we were living sub-standard. I'm baffled at why the mass of people choose to pay so much for so much they don't need. It's the price of land that drives the cost of houses up and why they need to be such huge wasteful things... on a little bit of land.

I can't even remember if/when the last time I ever saw 4 for a dollar, never mind even just a dollar! In the bigger picture, I still think these trucks are super cheap to build compared to 90% of the other options out there

From what I've seen, assuming you can get them, the prices for NOS pieces are still reasonable, especially when you put it into perspective, by considering what a common part costs for a newer vehicle. There are exceptions, which are expensive, because they're rare and desirable. For example, an NOS expansion kit, Cargo light kit, Radio kit.
