Air horns (pictures)

Here are the various air horns available in the 1970 GMC Accessory catalog. As you can see if you have a light duty truck like ours you need the vacuum-powered compressor that is shown on the second page.

The first page is mostly for the tilt cab Astro 95, not applicable to us. The Town and Country set is made specifically for light-duty non-air trucks (except diesels, no vacuum to run the pump!).

The bigger ones are over 2' long... and by default they're all set up for roof mount, pull-cord action. But you can add the solenoid (Gosh I'd love to find an original solenoid and tank!)

Those are cool but I don't think I could drill a hole in the roof to mount them

The town & country was mainly intended for use on medium duty trucks that don't have air brakes. Those are what you'll see these on. But there was nothing stopping a light truck owner from using them. Back then, the most common form of fixing up a pickup was adding the big truck bells and whistles...air horns, Perluxes, clearance lamps (often in many areas), west coast mirrors, CB whips, bed rails, mud flaps, hood ornaments, etc. It's funny, but you running stacks wasn't so popular.

Well, they're clearly intended and approved by GM in all trucks. Not cars, but all trucks. Yes, it says that.

But I would agree 98% that these were more commonly bought by people with medium duty trucks without air.

The good news, Mr. K, is that there's no chrome stack section for the C10 :-)

Fortunately the big ones that are almost 3' long and have a 5.5" bell are for the over-the-road cabover trucks, not the C/K1500-3500. But the smaller sets are. I have one on hand, and it's PULL CHAIN.

Yes, pull chain. Unless you pony up for the optional elecrtric solenoid the default operation is a little pull chain valve that hangs through the roof.

I'm old enough to have watched "BJ & The Bear" and there's still no way mine would go anywhere but under the body somewhere....

I'll bet that Bear is still alive and addicted to menthols in the LA hills somewhere.

I heard someone in Walmart parking lot last week blast an air horn. I'll bet it was inspired by the "air horn pranks" on youtube. Those videos are pretty funny.

Sometimes I will honk at people outside just to make them look. I never honk if they are doing something where a sudden distraction could cause injury (on a ladder, playing ball, etc.). Just walking or standing about, I'll honk.

I like to give mine a quick blast when I'm behind someone playing with their cell phone sitting at a green light and not paying attention, then when they look in their mirror looking for a big rig, I start looking around too.LOL

No, I need to find a tank first (and a solenoid). I think behind the grille if I can hide them or down on the frame if I can't.

Suffice to say I will NOT be bolting anything to the top of my cab!

I had a truck I mounted five different sounding horns in...with relays. It was funny and I want to rig another one up like that. You honk at someone and the guilty party thinks they pissed several people off all at once. Never saw someone look around so much so fast. One thing for sure, they got their act together and I never had anyone single me out to give me the finger

My '72 has a diesel train horn that was an accessory back in the day. It's mounted to the left inner fender and wired with the hi/lo horns.

I've always liked the sound and picked a set up pretty cheap with the mounting brackets and wires...
