wheels and back spacing for stepside

Im about to buy some wheels for my 68 stepside rig it has a full ride tech set up under it looking at 20x8 for the front and 20x9 or 10 for the rear i know some of my fellow rig drivers with a step side my know what back spacing works the best for the stepsides

I have 17x8 with 235 55 17 in front on 4.5" backspace. In the rear I have 17x9 and 275 55 17 on 5" backspace. That's the biggest tire that will fit without bed mods pretty much. When I converted to 5 lug, I went to the wider 70-72 axle housing which is what made it all work.

I had 20x8.5 (5.25 bs) and 22x9 (5.50 bs) on my 68 stepper. Had to swap the rearend to the later/longer version to make the back space work because Coys sent me the wrong back space... I ordered 5" bs but a 4 3/4" bs would be perfect. Swapping the rearend actually worked out better than having the 5" bs that I ordered. The longer rearend is 3/4" longer on each side which gave me and extra 1/4" clearance on each side. Tires were 245/40-20 and 265/40-22...

I was just faced with the same questions, and was having trouble getting info from this site. Usually posters do not give enough detail on their trucks to definitely draw a conclusion. There are two different length rear ends. Mine is a '67, so is the short one. Also step sides are more compact in the rear tire area, so fleetside posters info will be useless to a stepper owner.
My truck had 275/55 15's on 15"x8" rally wheels with 3.9" BS. when I got it. The tire sides stuck out into the wheel openings, but had plenty of clearance on the inside. I knew I could use more back space and needed to gain clearance on the outside. I tried some 18 x 9's with 265/50zr 18 Nitto 555's. The new wheels have 5" BS which moves the sidewall within about a half inch on the inside, and seems to be way better on the outside. I may have to run spacers to keep from rubbing. The truck is in the build stage and will be un-drivable for the near future. I am running a long panhard bar that sits level at ride height, so side to side movement will be well controlled. Still, a half inch clearance seems a little tight to me. We will see....

I ran almost the same setup as Bucks68 truck. 20x8.5 (5.25" bs) & 22x9 (5.75" bs) with a 5/7 drop on a step side. 70 GMC with the wider rear axle, 255/35r20 tires up front and 265/40/r22 out back. Wheels are Rev Classic 106 with the machined finish. I hope this helps.

Another thing to think about is the lower profile the tire you run, the less sidewall bulge it has. This allows for a little more backspace usually. A 275 40 17 for instance might be great on a 5" backspace rim, but a 275 60 15 would rub on the innder bedside. Keep this in mind if you change tire/rim from what somebody else posted.

In the same boat. Also in the process of swapping 6 bolt hubs for 5x5's.
My front end is narrowed 2 inches, but I have kept mine at stock height.
I know "the look" is to go with 20's or 22's and slam everything down into the weeds
and make a bumper dragger. But I wanted to go the stock height route.
I have the stock 68 GM 12 bolt in the back. (except 5x5 axle conversion).
Thinking of going with Center Line Revolutions. 18x9.5 and 17x8.
I can get these with a 4.50 BS (rear) and have several options for the front, but will likely go 4.00 BS.

I think the rear might stick out a little, but that's OK. The nice thing about going with this setup is that I can use 97-99 Vette tires. (275/40-18 and 245/45-17)

If you were going to have to freshen up your existing rearend anyway then getting one of the longer style rear ends would be a great move.

These are 18x8's in the back (255/55/18) and 18x7's in the front. They are advertised as having 4.5" backspace but when I measured them it was 4" good thing though because I was getting some rubbing with what looked to be about 1' of sidewall clearance. I had to re-center my rear end to stop it, I'm using the stock, narrow rear end.

Nice looking truck Steve. As you found out, you have to center the rear end to get a true picture on your clearances.
