adv/disadv of 4:11 gears?
this is kinda off the subject, but my friend has a 68 camaro with a rebuilt 327(about 265 hp)and 308 gears in the rearend, his dad wants to put 411's in this week, since you guys are pretty knowledgeabe about everything chevy, what are the disavantages of this swap, besides gas mileage. will his top end speed be affected? i am trying to talk him into a posi unit also, is there any point in putting 411's without posi? just curious, thanks

Posi can be scarry in the rain, or any other time traction is non-existant.
The 4.11's will cut the top end off, possably by qiite a bit, the trade off will be getting to the top end quicker....quite a bit quicker. Think of it like the gears on a 10 speed. You pit it in 1st, ans you can pull the front wheel off the ground but you can only go 5 MPH. Put it intp 10th gear, and you take forever off the line, but you can go pretty darned fast. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. The 4.10 posi is a little squirrely in my longhorn,even on dry road you dont want to tap the throttle unless the truck is straight! I did also lose a little top end....she will run 125 @ 6200-6300......

thanks guy, 'll prob go with it, he hasnt even topped it out,an isnt really interested in how fast it'll go, just how quick it'll run the quarter orless in, he's justlike me and only wants to kill civics, later, sean

Remember though, you can go with too much gear and slow the E.T in the 1/4.

You'd have to have a pretty narrow powerband (i.e. my truck's 350, lol) to get out of the powerband in the quarter, even on 4.11's. Figuring a decently built 327 should rev to 5000, 5500 no problem...I know a lot of 4th generation F-Body guys like 4.11's in their 6-speed cars (the 5th and 6th speed overdrives keep the gas mileage up) and they've got up to about 5800RPM to play with, I believe that with 4.11's they're decently deep into 4th in the traps, but they're also making more power. With the 3.42's (like ours has) they're redline in 3rd through the traps.
I think you'd have to go to 4.56 before a lot of motors start having trouble with most trannies and running out of power. ------------------ Project 1970 - soon to be seen at http://milhouse.treylis.org:81/
