So I've decided that I want to run my truck in bare metal. I know I have the rust issue but is there any away to keep the rust away. I was told clear coat but read that eventually it would rust under the clear coat. Than I was told about Gibbs Oil apply about once a month and the rust will not appear. What's your guys take on this

mild steel rusts, except in Arizona.

In 2011 I almost bought a Suburban that was in Panama City Beach, Florida in bare steel. The owner used WD40 on it. Unfortunatley I didn't buy it.

Fast forward a few years and I stumble across it here, owned by a member. He used linseed oil.

Be sure to use 'Boiled" Linseed Oil so it will dry. Penetrol also works well on bare metal.

There's no cure for loose scaly rust. Period. But if you have visual rust, you can clear it....maybe. I say "maybe" because clear is designed to stick to paint, not bare steel.
Here's the rust/adhesion test. Take a paint scraper, scrape on surface while holding a white towel or Kleenex to catch falling debris. If you see debris, keep scraping/wire brushing/sanding. If there's no debris, then you are good to give it a try.

Rust can't grow without air and moisture. WD40 would work for a short period of time. Heavier oils/grease will work too. Clear coat should work too if you have a clean abraded surface.

If time is on your side, do a test a panel.

Another fad I don't understand but from what I have read on it a lot of WD-40 and scotchbrite pads and elbow grease if you want to keep it looking like bare metal rather than rusted metal.

Hate to say this, But Rust finds its way into Arizona! maybe not as much,
but it is here, Trust me i Know!

Sounds like a lot of maintenance to me. Like the billet guys that drive their car or truck on a weekend cruise then spend all week evenings detailing the under carriage. I just want to be able to drive mine daily and hand wash it every couple of weeks and hit the under carriage with low pressure washer when I go off road or drive in winter. Also around here there is so much dust and pollen that anything remotely oily would give you more of a velour or suede finish....

Boiled Linseed Oil,
My old man used that 50 years ago to thin oil based house paint and as a finish over top of the stain as a clear on gun stocks..
To this day just the metion of the stuff and I can vividly smell that horrible stench..

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
