Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

Hi All!

I hope I put this question in right section..
I have a '59 Fleetside in which I want to put an ordinairy (modern) radio, but I don't want to cut up my dash, I have an original radio-delete plate that will go back into it's place.
Under the dash is no room, because I'm going to have some gauges installed there.
So, to make a long story short, do you have any ideas on where to put a radio, out of sight maybe?

I thought of the glovebox, but there's then little room for other things.
Also thought of mounting it at the headliner, which in my case is going to be wood...
It would be nice if I can reach it while driving.

The speakers are going in the cab corners and behind the benchseat, tank isn't there anymore.

If you have a great idea, or allready mounted it somewhere, please post some pics??

Thanks in advance!

since nobody answered, try posting in the 47-59 thread
i made a console to get mine out of the dash
if you have music on your phone there are a few no head unit options
Bluetooth or headphone jack straight to an amp under the seat

Re: Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

Thanks Ogre!

I don't want a centerconsole, because I like the classic look of the cab with a bench seat.
I sure have music on my phone, but would like to hear the radio sometimes...
The radio has got bluetooth also.
Maybe under the seat is the best option for me, or a maybe radio with a remote?

I also post this question in the 47-59 section, thanks for the tip!!

I am working on a retractable tray that brings the radio behind the dashboard when not in use. I can work with you on making one for your truck if you would like.

Where under the dash are the gauges going?

This is where I am right now.
As of now the plans are to mount the radio under the seat and control the radio with a remote.

I'd like to know more about your solution

Re: Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

I am still in the planning stages so don't have pictures but my tray will have to rotate 90 degrees in an axis parallel with the floor and perpendicular to the length of the body before going up behind the dash so it may work for yours. Depending on room behind the dash you may also be able to do it to the left of the steering column.

I also plan to do something like this for my added gauges.

Re: Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

Under the dash on the leftside is my fusebox.
And I'm thinking to make the whole white part from left to right under the dash...
Is your plan still gonna work then?
Sounds good!

The fuse box is mounted on the dash not on the fire wall? And yes my plan could still be made to work.

Re: Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

The fusebox is mounted inside the cab, between the dash and firewall.
This is the best pic I have so far..

I am having a little trouble interpreting that picture. Is the parking brake handle mounted right now? Can you take measurement between the fuse panel and the dashboard?

How about an overhead console?

I had a friend with a 55 210 coupe. He build an overhead console (running right to left along the windshield) that gave him a place for a stereo and other things that was actually pretty non-obtrusive and helped him keep his dash completely stock.

You can do that if you want, it doesn't really fit the view I have for my Suburban.

That also crossed my mind.
Haven't seen a Task Force truck with an overhead console yet...

Re: Where to put the radio?? 1959 TF.

Do you have enough room to put it in the glove box? You should be able to use a single DIN unit and fab up a mount for it there. If you want you can put an IR extender on it so you can use a remote on it and never have to open the glove box door to change the settings.

There's enough room in the glovebox to put a single DIN radio in there, but then you have almost no room for other things.
I was collecting pics of the web for glovebox radios, it's a good possibility though...
