Need help with a hitch
Hi everyone. First, I want to say that I'm loving this site! You all are very helpful and supportive!
I have an 86 C10 fleetside short bed, and I need a hitch. I need to pull a single car trailer to move some other projects around. I've got a step bumper, but I'm afraid to use it. There's nothing "wrong" with it, but the idea of pulling a trailer with it makes me nervous. I plan to switch to a sport bumper as soon as I find one, and I'd like to do a hidden hitch, but I don't know how I can pull that off with the step bumper. Also, in searching for hitch info, I keep finding sites that say a hitch will fit from 67-00 Chevys. I'm pretty sure that's bunk. Can you guys please tell me all trucks that we can use hitches from? Thanks everyone! |

Re: Need help with a hitch
mine have all been Reese hitches. they are not hidden hitches. You have to make sure you get one for the pickup as suburbans are wider in the rear. Reeses website should have the part number on it or Uhaul can get them too

Re: Need help with a hitch
I too have an '86. My hitch is hidden. The white/silver looking "flat bar" on the left of the pic is actually the bottom of the bumper. The hitch is a CURT brand, Class 3, P/N 13028. A quick search shows it runs between $123-160 depending on where you buy it from.

Re: Need help with a hitch
I pulled a 13028 Curt hitch off my 86. They had to remove the spare tire carrier when they mounted it.
If you still have your tire carrier in place you might have to remove a few components to mount a hidden hitch. Pm sent with more details.

Re: Need help with a hitch
Not sure about hidden ones, I have a regular Reese truck hitch from Walmart. Paid like 115 bucks; said it didn't fit my specific truck but it fit so many other I thought no way it couldn't, so I bought it and it fit perfect, what're the chances...

Re: Need help with a hitch
Thanks to everyone for the help and info. It's very appreciated!
The question that no one has touched is the difference in the frame of 88-98 trucks and our 73-87. Again, thanks everybody. |

Re: Need help with a hitch
Uhm I'll tell you what I'd do, go to a local junkyard and bring a note pad and tape measure. Seeing stuff in person helps, but so does direct info. Sorry I couldn't answer that question buddy

Re: Need help with a hitch
I believe the frame holes are 34" apart on the vehicles the 13028 hitch will fit. Measure your frame rail separation.

Re: Need help with a hitch
I have been searching for a hitch for my pick-up as well.
What I am finding is that the major manufacturers spec different hitches based on a couple of points a) bed length (6 or 8 foot) b) bumper type (sport or step) Of course this doesn't consider the "hidden" version. I am planning to find a hitch that the receiver would end up in the middle of the license plate panel on my step side, so that it will be completely behind the plate. I would then mount the plate on an old gas door hinge from a late 60's early 70s A body ( Cutlass, 442, Chevelle, GTO, Skylark, etc) Then my hitch would be truly hidden. Years ago I remember someone (Sir Michaels?) made a hitch and plate hinge set-up for a roll pan that did exactly that. I just did some searches a came up mostly empty for 73-87 trucks

Re: Need help with a hitch
I've actually bought a hitch based on a manufacturer's site saying it would fit.
It didn't. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=656757 Anyone have a bolt on hitch for these that worked with the factory spare in place? I've got the one in the thread above and another one that I bought for our 95 SWB that ended up being for an ext cab only. Don't want to buy another to find it won't fit. |
