Transmission question

I have a 1977 Chevy short box with a bad turbo 350 what is a good transmission to replace it with?

A t56 6 speed manual will fit nicely in its spot. But it depends on what you want. Anywhere from a 200r4 will bolt in, up to 700r4, 4l60e, etc... Butbthiae require modifications. But you gain advantages

what kind of

modifications will I have to do ? I was thinking 700r4

I just did a quick search, and it appears a 700r4 is the same length as a 9" tailshaft th350. So if you still have the truck th350 you should be good to go. You will need to move your cross member back 3/4" though. And a 700r4 requires a torque converter lockup controller. A trans shop can install a hydraulic kit so no electronics are required. And then install a TV cable and you should be good.

I guess it depends on how much highway driving you plan to do.

It really depends on what you use it for and what your final drive is.

A good Turbo 350...

A 700R4 or a Turbo 400 would also be good choices. Might depend on what could be had locally with your cost parameters.

Unless he's making big power I don't see much reason to go 400.

Thanks guys, found a guy that has rebuilt turbo 350 for $425 and 80 for converter.

Keith are you saying a turbo 350 would be a good one ?

I would rebuild the 350 you got now or upgrade to a 700r4.

Yep. For a daily driver, light hauling or light trailering it would be fine.

If you are going to start making big horsepower you might want to step up to a TH400.

If you are trying to eek out some fuel economy then you may want to go to an overdrive: 700R4 or 200R4.

The overdrive trannys might also increase your cruising speed (depending on what gearing you have).
