Steering column question
Hey everyone, I have a tilt column out of a 77 and I want to put it in my 76. I need to replace a seal on the intermediate shaft. Ive already removed the clip but I can't figure out how to get the seal out.
Also does anyone have a part number for this seal?

Re: Steering column question
Mines already torn. That's why I'm taking it apart.

Re: Steering column question
I did one in my 76. No looking back. Just do away with the original shaft entirely. Far tighter than the new rag joint on my CUCV.

Re: Steering column question
Other than the Doghead starter relay mod I've tried to keep the M1008 original. For some reason the unmolested CUCVs seem to be desirable. Otherwise She would have an XJ shaft and an SM465 with a Gear Vendors OD and gauges.
The new rag joint tightened up some of the slop on my CUCV but not as much as the XJ shaft in my 1976.

Re: Steering column question
The link with the disassembled lower worked out. I found that by putting a straight slot screw driver in the slots in the ends and working each side down little by little. I actually have 2 columns. One with a good boot and one with a bad one. I need the top on the one with the bad boot on it. So I just swap tops and install the new tilt column. I would like to fine a seal but it sounds like there pretty hard to find. I read some where that early chevelles used the same column. So I'm gonna dig a little. I stopped by a Chevy dealer and there parts computer goes back to 82. Any one know if they used the same boot/column in 82?

Re: Steering column question
Download the 73-78 & 79-84 truck parts books...
I believe Ian Harding has the Chevelle parts books on gmpartswiki.com

Re: Steering column question
I just stopped at the dealer and they said it was discontinued for like 10 years.

Re: Steering column question
I would go the jeep route if I didn't already have another shaft and boot. I'm just gonna swap the caps and call it good.

Re: Steering column question
I ought to go with an XJ shaft on mine, guess I should find one in a junkyard and hope it still has what I need. My steering isn't great.

Re: Steering column question
Go to Car-Part.com and look up Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001 (XJ chassis)... The part you're looking for is the "steering coupler".
Borgeson sells raw steering shaft parts to roll your own... telescoping steering shafts and single row needle steering universals. They're kinda spensive tho...

Re: Steering column question
I just took the good boot apart and it came apart a little differently. I oiled the boot all the way around where it sits in the coupler just I didn't rip it. Then I used the shaft like a slide hammer. A few little slides and it came right out.
