Big advantage if you're snowplowing! Got the dual set up in my 72 K2500 plow truck, works great!

Advantages all depend on how it is hooked up.
The way shown on this scematic will let you listen to your radio all night long, or run all the stuff in the camper all night long off of battery number 2, while as soon as you hit the ignition switch, it will switch back to battery #1. Both will charge as the engine runs.
If you hook it up with a large cable going from the positive post to the starter (on both batteries) you will get some kick ass amps to crank over in the coldest days and with the highest compression with no problems.
If you hook it up to where the positive from # one goes to the starter, then the negitave goes to positive of # 2 and then the negitave goes to ground, then you'll have a 24 - 28 volt system that will fry everything in your truck (with the exception of LED lights, and maybe your starter) and is not recomended.

I'm going to be using it to help run a winch. Which setup would you recommend for getting more juice to the winch?
thanks,
Matthew

air

this would probably be good also for running electric air compressors and stuff when you are showing off your air system to the neighborhood.

That's how I would do it for max amps on a winch.

the way i do it is have the one battery hooked up normally, have a lead going from the positve side of that battery to one side of a heavy duty solenoid, the other side of the solenoid is hooked up to the other battery and the solenoid is only generated when the key is on the on position, then I hook all the accesories, like my stereo and camper up to the second battery. then power is only drawn from that battery when the key is off, but as soon as the key is turned on, the battery gets linked back up to the charging system again
