Help needed! Calling Everyone with a multimeter!

Hi there,

Me and 72K5 are working on coming up with a way to adapt our temperature gauges to work with the chevy standard temp senders. I only have one gauge, though, so I don't have a good sample of how much these gauges can vary.

If you have a temperature gauge that isn't connected, I would REALLY appreciate it if you could do two quick measurements please! If you look at the back of the gauge, there are 4 screws sticking out -- at 12, 3, 6, and 9 O'Clock. Could you please take resistance measurements from 12-3 and from 3-9, and 3-12? You can reply to this thread with your results.

1) Resistance from 12-3
2) Resistance from 3-9
3) Resistance from 3-12 (Should be 1 + 2)

Thanks!!!

Brian

Hey there.

1) Disconnect everything from the gauge.
2) Put the multimeter in Ohms (Resistance) mode. Looks like a horseshoe.
3) Touch the red probe to one screw and the black probe to the other. Direction doesn't matter.

Here are the results of three temperature gauges that I took the readings on with my Fluke digital multimeter.

Readings are in ohms

----Test no.------3-12-------3-9-------6-12--------9-12

----1)------------- 49.2-------48.2------58.4--------98.1

----2)------------- 48.2-------46.8------61.1--------94.6

----3)------------- 49.6-------49.0------59.9--------98.3

I have at least three more temperature guages that I can check tomorrow if you don't get many replies.

Jim

Jim,

Could you please give me 3-12, 3-9 and 9-12?

Thanks,

Brian,

I edited my post. (12-3 is the same as 3-12).

Ludwig,

I'd be happy to rent you a gauge if it makes any of you feel better.

Thanks Jim.

That gives me a sample of 5 gauges now. Anyone else have an extra sitting in a box they can measure for me?

Jim,

sure...send me the guage, I'll take the readings, reply to this message and send it back.....

might be easier is you meter it yourself though....but then again I'm not always about easy.........

9 out of 10 personalities agree that doing things the easiest, most efficient way is smart....

the 10th one is currently trying to turn himself inside-out to match his shirt (he really doesn't want to put it on wrong agian...)

Here's what I get:

3-12-------3-9-------6-12--------------9-12
61.2-------48.7------Overload--------108.9

(Overload meaning infinite resistance)

Maybe I've got a bad gauge???

Jay,

No, that gauge is about right. The reason you don't have anything from 6-12 is that you don't have the external shunt installed. 6 is a ground terminal with no internal connection -- it grounds to the chassis through the instrument cluster.
