Syncrowave 250

I've been using a Miller HF for years to stick weld and just never have needed to TIG weld with it. I inherited it from my dad and I don't think he ever TIG welded with it since we've never had the foot control for it. I wanted to get it in shape to do some TIG with so I took it to a friend of mine that has a welder repair business and long story short, to get it in good condition I need to spend $1500 on it. As an alternative to doing that he has a completely refurbished, late model Sync 250 DX that he wants $2800 for. This machine has everything with it including a new water cooled gun and all the leads. This is the upright model with the cooling tank on board. He has been completely through it and it looks like it was just delivered from Miller. I'm convinced it's a good deal, just throwing this out for opinions and/or suggestions. I feel it will be a good compliment to my Millermatic 251. What do you guys think?

Re: Syncrowave 250

What will you be doing with it. What thicknesses and type of metal?

You may want to look at the inverters like the Invertig 221H same price but its new. Has all the 250dx features and some of the 350 features.

Re: Syncrowave 250

We have that machine at work as our dedicated tig... Love it but takes awhile to learn what settings it likes...

Re: Syncrowave 250

Have you tig welded before? If you dont know if you like it I wouldnt spend $2,800 on a new machine.

We had old Syncro's at school and they lasted forever. I learned most of my stuff on a new Syncro 250dx. It had a lot of settings but I never used most of them (didnt have a need). I am sure I will eventually learn/use all the other settings but I havent had a need to yet.

I ended up getting an AHP Alphatig for my garage. I'm kinda cheap so I probably would do the $1500 and use the old machine.

Re: Syncrowave 250

Appreciate the reply's. Yes I have TIG welded before and yes that machine has a ton of things on it that I probably don't need. I do like most things about it. Todd has a new micro torch on it that I really like. I'm a bit of a Miller loyalist which is why I just bought it and got it home. If my cousin doesn't want the old HF I will likely keep it and dedicate it to stick welding and use the sync for TIG.

I looked into the Inverter machines but there are downsides to going that way. I could have bought an Inverter from Todd but he didn't recommend it.

Re: Syncrowave 250

If you look around on CL, you should be able to find a Syncrowave 180 or 200 for anywhere from $1000-2000. Either of those will likely weld anything you need to. I had a Sync 200 for several years, and picked up a Sync 210 at SEMA last year.

"The power of Blue!"

EDIT: Oops, just saw that you bought the 250. lol. congrats.
