Help with decoding.

Hi,

I have decoded the VIN on my old man's truck. No problem there.

The secondary number (see picture) that is FT055379 is giving me trouble. I can't seem to locate reliable information on what that means.

I'm assuming it's the trim package/colour info?

Anyone an expert on this that can enlighten me?

I gave it the old college try on research before posting, I don't want to waste anyone's time. I didn't see anything in the stickied FAQ talking about this...and the GM Heritage original spec PDF doesn't seem to show anything either. All the VIN Decoding pages I've been to either don't mention it or it doesn't match up.

So from your Serial Number or VIN as it's called now, your Dad has a 66 GMC 1/2 ton longbox Fleetside. I've looked in the 1963,64,65 & 66 Canadian Chevrolet/GMC shop manual and there's no indicator so far of what the other code signifies. This is the tag mounted on the cowl is it not?

Tag is on the underside of the upper portion of the cab at the driver side door.

I looked through the Chevy Spec book I have from Heritage truck and the paint code 53 I assume to mean 530 which is Off-white/black with a Fawn interior STD. I assume Oshawa dropped the 0 off the end to save time in stamping.

The rest of the FT055379 doesn't show up in the spec book at all that I'm seeing.

Have you asked Oshawa to run the VIN to get some of their original information?

Actually no I haven't. I didn't know you could for that vintage.

Is there any particular way of contacting them I should use?

They used to have a department called Vintage Services. I tried the link I had and it doesn't work. The link in my last message seems like they out source it now. Any pictures of your Dad's truck?
Canadian Serial Number Systems are not configured like the American built trucks. It's interesting that the Shop Manuals and Parts Books don't have the breakdown for that code.

I've seen the vintage vehicle website previously...I wasn't sure if it would be worth it for this truck and how reliable the information is. Interesting stuff though.

In 1966 all of the paint codes started with a 5. So it's the 5 that is left off. Your 53 is paint code 553.
Over on the 67-72 side we have been discussing the FTO number for several years. No one knows exactly what it was used for. But it's not decodable. It's more like a tracking/reference number or something like that. We really don't know. It shows up on SPIDs on Oshawa built trucks. If y'all ever figure it out, we would love to know.

So according to my info 553 would be Off-white/silver.

Interesting stuff on the FT codes. It's too bad we don't have someone that worked at the plant in administration we could pick their brain.
