Power steering flush
My power steering works but doesn't feel right. I checked the fluid & it is dirty looking & has a rusty tint to it. I want to change or flush it. HOW that my question.

Re: Power steering flush
Take the return hose to the reservoir off, run it into a bucket, and start the engine for a minute or so until it pumps all the old fluid out. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock to push out the remaining fluid in the gear box, then refill with fresh fluid and bleed the air out.

Re: Power steering flush
How does one "bleed the air out" during this process? I'm about to flush mine also.
thanks! |

Re: Power steering flush
after you flush the old fluid you can put a fuel filter on the return side to catch any extra crap that don't come out you would be surprised at the crap it will catch change the filter once or twice it will clog and starve the pump and squeal but shouldn't hurt as long as you don't let it squeal for too long

Re: Power steering flush
keep turning lock to lock sometimes you have to drive it a while it will bleed the air to the pump and recheck the fluid level

Re: Power steering flush
Put the hose back on the pump and fill the reservoir, fire it up and crank side to side, check, fill, repeat.

Re: Power steering flush
I hook a gallon jug of new p/s fluid to pump via return line so pump dont run dry, mount it higher than pump. Then take return line from p/s box and run it into some kind of catch let new circulate the do lock to lock a few times. Rehookup return line and your done. I also install a return line filter.
