Inside door latch issues

I started having some issues with my driver door latch mechanism. First off, when I push down on the handle to lock the door, its hard to push down. Second, every once in awhile when I shut the door, it sounds like the wheel is off a little as the door doesn't shut like it should, like when a seatbelt gets trapped in the door. I havent cleaned or lubed the mechanism for quite a few years. Anyone else had this happen, and besides replacing the part, how did you fix it,
