'64 chevrolet "12 gauge" C10

Hey guys,
This is my first post so if I'm in the wrong section or stepping on any toes, let me know.

I bought this beauty a little over a year ago and love it to bits. It survived an entire northern Canadian winter ( obviously not counting the other 50 or so ) and kept serving me into the summer.

Took it out to shoot skeets with my buddy and made it there just fine.
On the way back my buddies shotgun ( unloaded and checked ) fell off the gun rack. He put it in its case and ever so clumsily threw it on the accelerator. I think in all other circumstances the truck would have thrown a few rocks and been fine. However I was going down a hill and using compression to slow down, so the added stress of taking up the slack caused all sorts of fun things to happen to my transmission.

In a nutshell: it's about to get cold again and I'd rather be inside 4 wheels than on 2.

Here she is an hour before the shenanigans.



I will add more details, pictures and many more questions but for now that's it.

Hopefully you guys can help me bring her back to her prime

I spent most of yesterday running around trying to get parts and such to get her working again. I found what I believe is the right input shaft and input retainer on ebay. I'll order those today.

The clutch bearing I was able to get at NaPA. Sadly the clutch is not available through them. It's an 11", if it was 10 I'd have it today.

If anybody had any leads on where to get one, I have most of the serial numbers to help.

A quick few specs
- L6 engine 230 CI ( could be a 250 from what my research told me)
- muncie SM318 side shift, 3 on the tree
- total of 6 bullet holes ( you can see most of then on my picture )

Thanks! short term is to get it rolling again. Then it's a big LMC order for a few cosmetics including a vinyl seat upholstery replacement.
Long term is a flat maroon paint job with off white accent colour.

I learned from experience that if I don't love my vehicle: I don't maintain it / put money into it. So I end up junking a vehicle that could keep running for a small amount of money. I don't go through the " it's not worth fixing " issue anymore.

Cost effectiveness is out the window lol

Does anybody have any leads for a clutch?

Oh, an 11" clutch kit? Pretty standard item IMO/IME, considering the wide range of applications and decades of use. I'd just buy one from Rockauto for <$100 if I needed one, but I'm not in Alberta.

By the way...you were saying it was a 230 or 250....1964 came with a 230 as an option...250 wasn't an option until 66.

Little update,
Ordered the input shaft and the input shaft retainer on ebay. Got a clutch from rock auto. Input shaft came in yesterday, still waiting on the other 2.

It's been hovering around 0 Celsius recently so it's getting cold on 2 wheels!

I gotta get fixing so questions are in order.

While removing the starter from the bell housing, I did so without removing the wires leading to it. I threw it on the inner fender and it fell on this things:

Since I didn't disconnect the battery, it melted a hole in the assembly on the left. It leaked what I'm assuming is mineral spirit.

Questions are:
What is it?
What does it do?
And what was the liquid if not mineral spirit.

Clutch came in and looks right, input shaft retainer was somehow dropped by the mailman in the parking lot of who sent it to me. That's what their email says anyway.

Anybody know what fluid I need to fill this with? ( 2 posts back )

having a hard time looking at what melted ... its a hazy photo. is there a way to get a clearer photo w/o as much haze in it ...

working on anything close to electrical, always disconnect the battery. its always cheaper in the long run ( at when something goes wrong and it gets damaged )

its been awhile for me working on one of these. a clutch assembly leaked ...???

The vertical black cylindrical thing with the one large wire like a plug wire in the center and two other small terminals on the top? If so, that's the ignition coil.

Welcome to the forum, nice truck. Best I know ignition coils are filled with some type of oil, not mineral spirits. Good luck on getting it back in service.

Hello again Guys,

haven't posted in a while but kept hovering around.
I have a few new problems to deal with and need some help.

I broke my manual steering box while hunting and I can't find everything I need anywhere.

I'm trying to do it on the frugal side ( work is slow right now )
So unless you guys know of a better way of doing things I'm looking at

#1 Finding a rebuild kit

The ball bearings/ U channel and the steering shaft work fine so all I would NEED is the bearings, 2 seals and the bushings.
I took what was left of one of the bearings to a bearing shop and they had nothing to match.
I found the seals on rock auto
I checked NAPA and classic industries with no luck

I found these look right but not sure if they would fit and no
way to check

2nd option is finding a rebuilt box but what's the fun in that? Its expensive with the Canadian dollar and the core charge.

3rd option is mounting power steering
I have access to a working power steering box, all I'd need is the pump/reservoir and possibly a mounting bracket. Captainfab seems to be the man to talk to
