57 speedometer help

Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone could help me out with my gauges on my 57. I am using the factory cluster and have logged almost 4000 miles since it was made drivable. The problem I have is that the speedometer just all of the sudden stopped working (after bouncing here and there) it has a new speedo cable and doesn't appear to be in a bind. I was curious if maybe the gauges have gotten to much dust in em and need to be cleaned out or if it just needs a new cluster. I am trying to not spend a $150 on the gauge and if I could fix them myself that would be great. If anyone has a link on how to repair them that would be great (or helpful hints) Thanks in advance

there is a plastic gear in the trans, disconnect the cable from the head and drive it; does the cable spin?
if the needle was bouncing the cable was either in a bind or dry (no lube)

does the odometer work? the speedo and odometer are separate functions
if neither works, your cable is probably not turning in the back of the cluster

when you take the cable off at the trans there may be enough drive sticking out of the cable to connect a drill and turn the inner cable. then you can watch the speedo to see if it is moving smoothly.

If you decide to take apart the speedo - and CAREFULLY pull it apart and look in the area of the gears that turn the odometer; there are 2 plastic gears - hopefully not chewed up of missing teeth . if they look in good shape ,put a small drop of trans fluid on the gears - then do the drill thing - the fluid may help free up the gears if they are stuck ,and at the same time you can check to see if anything else needs cleaning.
