64 Ignition Switch Wiring Help

I recently bought a new ignition switch for my 64 Chevy (350 sbc with alternator) because the one that came with it was obviously not the right one. It didn't fit properly in the mounting hole and would turn freely when I turned the key.
When I tried to wire up the new switch I purchased from Classic Parts, I realized there weren't enough wires. The PO did a major hack job in the wiring dept (along with most everything else) and it's been a nightmare trying to figure out his wiring scheme since he basically used all red wire.
Anyway, as you can see inthe picture, the switch I took off only has four posts (battery, ignition, accessories, ground) and the new one has five (batt, ignition, solenoid, acc and ground). The problem is that when I wire it up it, everything comes on, but it won't crank over. I had no problems before, and I double checked the wire from the solenoid s post to the ignition switch.
Wiring is probably my weakest area and I'm trying to learn as I go. Any suggestions on how I can fix this, short of re-wiring the entire truck?

Re: 64 Ignition Switch Wiring Help

The switch you took off has NO ground as the new one does old has BATT. ST/START(SOL)...ACC... and ING.... NEW has BATT... ST/START(SOL)...ING...ACC... and GROUND... take the BATT wire and each of the others one at a time touch them together and find the one the cranks it over that is the ST/START(SOL) wire ... the GROUND terminal is for testing the HOT light when cranking IF your cluster DON'T have gauges

Re: 64 Ignition Switch Wiring Help

If we have the same switch, your SOLENOID doesn't appear to be connected to your switch.

Yep, that's where I'm confused. The one I took off didn't have a wire to the solenoid. As a matter of fact, it didn't even have a solenoid post and it worked just fine. It just didn't fit in the dash properly.

Re: 64 Ignition Switch Wiring Help

On your old switch the center post is the SOL/START terminal ... IF you started the truck by turning the key to the right with the old switch then the SOLENOID WAS hooked up for SURE .... looks to me like the RED wire to the LEFT of the blue is on the GROUND terminal and it is most likely the SOL wire OR if it was one of the others the truck would crank as soon as you turned the key on ASSUMING that you have the BATT wire in the correct place ....MOVE the one from the LEFT of the BLUE WIRE to the RIGHT of it ....the terminal with NO wire on it to the RIGHT of where the blue wire is hooked AS seen in the PIC above

Re: 64 Ignition Switch Wiring Help

That fixed it. I was thinking the middle post on the old switch was a ground since it wasn't marked, but it was for the solenoid. Thank you guys so much for the help.

Which wire on the ignition switch has power when cranking and running, but turns off when we turn the switch off?

The one marked ON (in pic) above or marked IGN on back of the switch , also it is the only one that is 90' from the others

The ACC de-powers when cranking but is on when running/on and is the only one on when key is turned to the left and it is off when the key is off
