lifting the 84

Looking to put 38s on a 84 high Sierra what all do I need to do to make this work how big a lift do i need and do I need to do a body lift as well any help or thoughts would be great thanks in advance

A 8 inch lift with some fender triming will do,But if you want to off road it you need 1 ton axles if you don't have them now.

Your looking at a lot of changes for a tire that big.

1. Frame reinforcement at the steering box
2. Cross over steering or a raised steering arm
3. Chromoly axles and HD axle joints like CTM - or a 1 Ton front axle
4. 6 to 8 inch lift with shock absorbers to match
5. Longer brake lines, longer axle vent lines
6. Driveshaft modifications for high angle driveline
7. Potentially larger brakes depending on how it stops - judgment call
8. If you Body lift you will probably need to adjust t-case shift linkage

There's a lot to think about. Your adding abnormal stress and geometry to the truck so you need to modify. Ord Offroad will have some of the stuff you need all in one place. http://offroaddesign.com/catalog.htm

What are you planning to DO with these 38 inch tires? Are you going offroad? Serious offroad, or casual offroad? Basically, just how much stress are you going to put this drivetrain through?

1-ton axles aren't really necessary unless you're planning on stressing the axles. If you just like having a lifted truck, but you're not planning on driving over boulders the size of buicks, then the stock components are often just fine, with a gearing change.

money.....lots of money!
it's not cheap to get them that hi, properly. besides spending twice what you prob figured you would, there is the cost of tires to contend with and their not cheap ....
hows the body on your truck? if your not afraid of cutting sheet metal, bushwacker cut-outs are like a 3" body lift with minimal work & cash outlay, more so if you wack off the front bottom of the fenders....
i think overall a 1 ton longbox or crew is prob cheapest to go that hi, axles & the stuff you need are already there, easier angles to deal with too.
i have prob spent enough on my crew to buy a bare bones econo car, but no question which i'd rather have
