77 C30 to 86 K5 parts swap

My local CL has a 77 C30 manual tranny wrecker with hydro boost brakes, I was wondering if the 77 steering column, pedal assembly and hydro boost assembly would work in my K5? I would also snag the 2wd steering gear box for future crossover steering. Thanks,

Jim

the column is different after 1984 so that wont work you would need to find one from a newer truck

Re: 77 C30 to 86 K5 parts swap

Your K5 uses metric steering line fittings, the C30 uses flared fittings. The pedal assembly should work...

Re: 77 C30 to 86 K5 parts swap

The pedals, Hydro-Boost, and Power steering pump are a set don't separate them. Vacuum boost brake pedal push rod pins are slightly different. Your 1986 pump will be missing the hydroboost return hose nipple and it has an O-Ring pressure hose fitting.

Keep all the power steering hoses including the SAE flare return fitting on the C30 steering box.

The C30 steering gear box is swap stuff. Someone will want it but you won't for this project. 2WD boxes are not the same as 4WD steering boxes.

You will need to get a few things...
The flare fitting pressure hose from the SAE Hydroboost is setup for a 70's SAE flare fitting steering box. It will not mate with your 80's O-Ring fitting steering box.
The easy way to take care of this is to use a pre 1980 SAE flare fitting Steering box off a K series truck with your pressure hoses and have done with it...
or...
You can make a hybrid Booster to Steering box pressure hose. Take your 70's hydroboost-to-steering box pressure hose and an 80's O-Ring Hydroboost-to-steering box pressure hose to a hydraulic hose shop. Have them make you a hybrid pressure hose with your 70's hydroboost to 80's O ring steering box fittings... Tell them to use SAE J2050 Power Steering Pressure hose.
You may be able to get it done at NAPA but any hydraulic hose outfit should be able to do the job for you.

The steering return hoses are just low pressure SAE J189 hose slipped over the hose fittings with Rotor Clip® type Constant Tension Spring Band Clamps for retention. Gates, Goodyear, Continental, etc make this hose and NAPA, Car Quest, etc. carry it or can get it. You can even buy it on Amazon. The clamps are the same deal. Don't use Worm Clamps on these hoses. They'll leak.

Re: 77 C30 to 86 K5 parts swap

so leave the steering column. take the hydroboost, power steering pump, pedal assembly and gear box (for crossover). and it should all work?

Re: 77 C30 to 86 K5 parts swap

That's what I'd do.

If the 77 is a manual transmission column maybe you can find a buyer.

The 73-83 columns don't have the dimmer or wiper controls.
84 has wipers and dimmer on the column but there are differences from 84 to 85.
If you want completely drop-in replacement on 85 and newer you should stick with 85 and newer columns.

There are other differences, year-to-year, in 73-83 columns but none of them matter to you.
