Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
This was my grandfather's truck purchased new and my parents told me last week that the air tank rear bumper was installed at the dealer for him. Not a factory option obviously but they recall the dealer putting it on for him. I've been considering putting a chrome bumper on and wanted to know if a C10 rear bumper will fit up? I'm guessing so but wanted to ask the experts. Thanks!

Re: Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
My truck has the same bumper in chrome. I like it better than stock bumpers.

Re: Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
I had a step bumper on my truck originally and recently purchased a chrome sport bumper. It fit with no problems.
You will need new bumper brackets, chrome bumper bolts and a license plate holder with light.

Wow! I think that air-bumper is really cool. Let's see the chrome one, too, please.

That bumper has a good old "Country Road" type look to it, it works with the overall truck. I would keep it. It looks good.

Re: Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
what do you mean "air bumper" ? that looks like an air valve used to inflate air shocks back in the 70's when everybody ran them, nice truck , so cool it has been in the family since new

Here it is in chrome. Although, I will admit that your painted one looks really well on your truck.

Re: Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
I also like the air tank bumper. I would have to keep it just because you're grandpa ordered it.
Ringo, I'm thinking you have a regular step bumper, not one that could hold air. |

Re: Bumper Question: 1972 GMC C2500
That air tank bumper is a really cool feature of that truck. A dealer installed, attractive and functional truck bumper on a truck bought new by your grandfather trumps a dime a dozen foreign made chrome car bumper. I can see someone wanting one of those if they didn't already have a cool era-correct step bumper. Afetr '72 the step bumpers bot to be 8" tall while eliminating the "step" feature that pre-73 bumpers gave. Pre-73 step bumpers hung down 4" below the gate to give a step while the gate was down as well as making that step 4" closer to the ground. The 73-up style (and aftermarket went straight to these) has the bottom in the same place but the top is 4" higher eliminated space under a lowered tailgate as well as making the step 4" farther from the ground. On 3/4t and 4wds this matters...if you ever need to climb into the bed.
