weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
I've been window shopping around and instead of modifying my existing frame I'm going to drop about 900 on a backhalf unit setup for ladder bars.
What I'm having trouble finding is detailed pictures of where people weld these on. I'm looking at a box frame style backhalf. So how would I tie it into the frame behind the cab?? Reference pictures would help. My truck is an 86 swb. I have an idea of how to do it But not sure where to cut and tie everything in |

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
Where you mount the back half structure depends on your wheel base measurement and the dimensions of the back half kit you have.
Grafting the structures varies according to the type of kit you have - are the rear frame rails designed to attached to a crossmember then the crossmember welded between the OE frame, or does the back half kit have frame rail stubs that directly weld to the existing frame rails?

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
You dont need to cut it off that extreme. I have a ChassisWorks Battlecruiser 4 link setup on mine and it is about 2 feet behind the cab.
Here it is installed with a 9" Ford shortened 20" overall.

Could I box in behind the cab? Then cut to fit the backhalf and weld it into the boxed portion portion then brace? That was one of the kits I was looking at |

The frame was a 56 and it was just boxed complete from the rear clip to the front 71 Z28 Camaro clip. So nothing custom, just not much of the '56 left! Boxing the stock frames rails is the easiest way to go. Many guys just opt for the some new 2x4 frame rail stock and build their own. Mine will also get an inner chassis support once all my drive-train is figured out. ChassisWorks, Art Morrison and many others sell those kits in tube or channel.

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
Well I sent you a PM just now
I picked up a ford 9" for cheap full rear end. So I guess now I need to order my rear wheels I want. Take measurements and see how much I need to narrow.. An all box frame built would be nice but I don't have access to the necessary tools to do so. The back half would be sent to my buddy kye Kelley to weld on and setup the 4link. I know they make box frame kits. But for now since I'm not making 1300 hp I will just cross brace in certain areas. I want to say my frame rails are stock 25" apart. Or at least I think so. I know a 25" long fuel cell will drop in back there I will be going to the multrie swap meet in Georgia and I plan on scooping up a 4link setup. Wheels and measurements are holding me back. I do know that I can rear down this 9" and get it cleaned up and ready to go. Just gave my friend a deposit on his nitrous 383 stroker. So next in the driveline will be a th400 rossler trans |

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
You mean the Magnum 2.0??? A pricey wheel but I love them on my Nova. A real light and TRUE wheel.

I sent you a couple pm with some 4 link parts info. My rear setup was a 15" x 15" wide wheel with a 5.5" backspace. With the Weld draglite wheels I had about 1/2" clearance to the fender. Some people do a 4.5" backspace is a pretty common on 15x12" wheels and use spacers. I dont like spacers on the track!

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
I don't like spacers either even on the street. So I will probably run around 5-6" BS to keep strain off the rear end. Then have the 9" narrowed to clear my inner fenders and everything else
I know for a fact my 15x10 prostars with a 325/60/15 MT ET street pros fit just fine with a 4.5" B.s. I had to remove my inner fender on the inside of my bed. Relief cut the lip on the wheel well, and roll my fenders. |

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
What do y'all think about running a 7.5" backspace on those 15x14 weld prostars.

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
Not exactly a backhalf but accomplishes a similar thing. I am bagging my to lay rocker though. I think I got about $100 bucks in the rear so far (plus another ~$500 in the links, bag mounts, panhard, etc). These frames are pretty narrow so you can fit wide tires if you move your four link mounts inward.
I notched the frame and welded the rear in higher up to hang my gas tank and air ride equipment. Made a cross member that will mount all my four link stuff to.

Re: weld on backhalf with 4 link setup
Are you planning on a roll cage to tie everything together? If not make sure the frame rail kit you buy has a t least .125 thick walls. My buddy got the .083 wall and did not cage it and matted it to the stock 57 frame unboxed and it bounces pretty good going down the road. I would think any chassis guy putting his name on the work would insist on doing it right or not at all, especially as famous as Kye Kelly is these days.

I do plan on a cage down the road. For now maybe just a 6 point
