Will this combo work?
I need an inexpensive work truck/driver and have a couple of friends that put this into my head:
One guy has a pretty decent 74 K10 longbed but no drivetrain. Sheetmetal is decent and pretty rust free Another buddy has a 1999 TBI 350, automatic and transfer case with harness and computer. $1000. 86,000 miles out of his daughters rolled over Tahoe. How much hassle to get the 99 drivetrain to work in the 74? Will the 99 transfer case adapt to the 78 front axle? I'm a 2 wheel guy so this is new territory for me. I have the resources to make it work up to a point but trying to keep my costs down for what I want to have. I need a worker since my '51 GMC 5 window will be the fun truck (6.0/4L80e/S-10 frame) Thanks for any links or thoughts |

off the top of my head youre going to need the wiring harness and probably going tohave to fab mounts... id check into those threads with the 5.3 builds.... Drivetrains for these trucks are cheap id probably go that route

Re: Will this combo work?
99 would have been a vortec 350, not TBI. The transfer case will not work for you. It is a drivers side drop, and you will need a passenger drop. You could use a NP208 from 80's or a NP 241 from 89-91 K5's and suburbans. It will bolt right up to the 4l60e as long as it was behind a 700r4 or a turbo 350. The 241's already have a speed sensor built in for the ECM. If you go with a 208 you will need to get a speed signal generator from somewhere like www.jagsthatrun.com. The engine and trans will bolt right in. Otherwise, it just a matter of working out the fuel system and wiring/ecm.

Re: Will this combo work?
I've seen the donor engine/trans/transfer case and it's a late TBI. 99 was the transition year. But it is a driver side drop. So the NP 241 will bolt up to the 4l60e and use the speed sensor. Kool
The 99 donor package is complete with all the wiring and computer. Any issues with motor mounts or trans crossmember? |

Re: Will this combo work?
Not a big deal about motor year. It's not an LS motor. No spark coils.
What years NP241 with VSS with passenger side drop and 6 bolt that will fit the 4l60e? |

Re: Will this combo work?
I know it's now a LS coming from a 99 Tahoe but call me crazy I like to know what engine we are dealing with. Big difference from a TBI 350 and a Vortec 350.

Re: Will this combo work?
Thanks for the update! Here is the drivetrain package. Hey for $1000 it'll work!
I stopped at a friend's shop; who is a long time transmission guy, and told him my plan. Guess what? He had a right sided transfer case from a 88-91 suburban that the PO had never picked up! He'll trade me my transfer case and rebuild the old one! All I have to do now is see how bad the truck is |
