396 Stroker Vortec?

Anyone ever done this out of a 350? my 98 has a dead motor and ive heard about doing a 396 stroker out of a 350 instead of a 383 Just how far can you bore and stroke a 350 before you hit water? I want to make around 450-550hp and torque around the same numbers at mid-range rpms

Re: 396 Stroker Vortec?

It's not worth giving up cylinder wall material for a few cubes! If you can get your hands on a 3.8" stroke crank, just bore it enough to clean up and go from there.

You ain't getting that kind of hp/tq with OEM intake and injection, so plan on a carb swap as well. A good 383 with mild cam and good tune will get close to 400 and put a big smile on your face while maintaining some degree of reliability. If you're giving up the injection, go big block and don't look back.

I agree, unless you really just want that number to tell people about.

And here we disagree. A marine intake manifold swap will support plenty of HP and give him the injector choice to make it happen. Carb's don't belong on OBS's. That's what 73-86's are for.

Re: 396 Stroker Vortec?

Any sites with good info on the intake? How much will it support - 500hp? 600hp?
Thanks, you've got my curiosity up, I have an engine for just such an application.

Fuel management won't support it. Google CSFI or spider injection. It will support a 383 which I just recently decided to do with my RamJet intake system and Fast EFI 2 system. Be a while though.

350 Vortec is L31. There are 3 variants.

Consider this

This was actually almost a grand more 2 Years ago.

Any genI or LT1 roller cam works. Lots of guys like the stock Lt1 and Lt4 cams as they aren't too wild and are known to work.
As for the vortec fuel managment not supporting the HP, its just a computer program. As such you can modify it. Plenty of people have.

Re: 396 Stroker Vortec?

I have an LT5 in my 5.7, my son has one in a stroker. Mine pulls strong for what it is. Sometimes you can find the LT4 and LT5 at the 'vette sites.
