Re: Oil Choice
Ok.... thanks for all the help and support. I went with the Valvoline 10-40 all weather and added a pint of of a oil additive Zink/Phos
Now that I removed the Joe Gibbs break-in oil it reads 50psi at a Idle which is almost a stall with the cam lopping along. The old break-in oil still looked brand new no color.. no grime.. so I guess the motor is running good. The guy at the oil change place said to get a magnetic oil plug If I'm worried. Does anyone do this? |

Re: Oil Choice
Yeah magnetic drain plugs are good, some spring for the magnet that fits around the oil filter.
If you're concerned at all, cut your old filter apart and have a look inside, see what it might have caught during break in. |

Re: Oil Choice
Yeah that gets a little spendy doesn't it. That's why I made the switch to Amsoil a few years ago. With preferred customer discount, Even with a $20 a year subscription, and paying tax and shipping, I'm still only paying about $7.50-$7.70 a quart. It's a high zinc content with an additive package that allows longer change intervals. So not only is it a little cheaper but I don't change as often either.
I use their Diesel oil in my duramax as well, using the old formulation for pre 2007 diesels (before they got smog equipment). The old formulation isn't available with off the shelf diesel oils anymore that I can find around town. Amsoil has it though. Anyway, with a 12 month 12,000 mile package in that oil, I also change that truck once a year ( I don't put any where near that mileage on it) so it saves money and waste as well. |

Re: Oil Choice
Use the Valvoline VR-1 conventional oil in the silver bottle with confidence, it has more than enough Zinc/Phosphorous for flat tappet applications no matter the weight/grade.
I don't think Valvoline would flat out lie about the contents and other tests have proven this to be true. |
