Original steering wheel fort a '72 C20

Hello all,

I just arrived here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=698493

I'm searching for a original steering wheel for my C20. At this moment it has this one:

20160204_183119 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

20160204_183131 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

20160204_183158 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

The photo's also show how it is mounted.

Question:
- what steering wheel is original in this car?
- Can it fit "as is" or need I a adapter?

Help is appreciated

Greetz, Ronald.

Your steering wheel would be black to match the steering column. It is the 69-72 style and will bolt right on, as that later Chevy car steering wheel did. The original steering wheel looks like this:

Re: Original steering wheel fort a '72 C20

Welcome to the site, Ronald. I know there have been some black 69-72 steering wheels for sale n the parts board. It is hard to find one without cracks. A really nice steering wheel can cost a pretty good amount. People are starting to want a lot even for the cracked and worn ones. Reproduction steering wheels are available. They are the second attempt, as the first ones cracked very easily on the rim. I have heard the later ones are better, but have no experience with them.

@Tim; yes, the cracks is a issue I know... my Edsel has the same problem, allthough it still has a strong steering wheel.

Some pics; interior above in the beginning post. Indeed medium bronze colour. It also has the tacho which I am told is a rare option not often seen. Airco is on board but no airco pump is present, also its mounting bracket is gone:

Again, engine is a 350 with 3-speed automatic. Original carburator is replaced with a Edelbrock carburator and manifold.

As I bought it early 2015 and it just had arrived at the shipping compagny:

And how she is now. New back-axle tires, new steering pump, European lights etc:

The wheels are 8-bolt ones. I'm told that these are not stock and that I have axles that are heavier than the standard ones?

Well, shoot! I still need a steering wheel and a original is the better option (when reasonably priced).

Grtz, Ronald.

Re: Original steering wheel fort a '72 C20

1972 3/4 ton. 3/4 ton's had heavier frame, heavy spring/axles, 8 lug wheels, and heavier rated tires for higher load capacity. You have optional heavier duty springs for any even higher load capacity. Your axles are probably factory, but the wheels hsve been changed. It would have had 16.5 inch wheels, probably changed to 16 inch for better tire availablity.
I like the color and options. Congratulations!

Thank you very much! Yes, the car had a lot of different models and options. It did cost some time to work all that info out when first having the car but I'm still learning

Re: Original steering wheel fort a '72 C20

Hello guys,

I want to appologize for the fact that I wanted to deal over the stearing wheel. I was not aware that this was not allowed here and that you have to be a (at least) premium member.

Here overseas in Europe we are not used to such a construction in a forum. Mostly we cannot sell or buy before you have a minimum of 10 or 20 postings. On some fora it is possible to buy or sell without any limitations. So if you used to such practice one can easely stumble on a forum like this one where other rules apply

Thanks for understanding, everything is sorted out

Grtz, Ronald.

Re: Original steering wheel fort a '72 C20

Your spid (service parts identification sheet) shows your truck originally came with parchment interior which consisted of white door panels and seat covers. The dash pad was originally sandalwood as was the steering column and steering wheel. Unfortunately the sandalwood steering wheel was the weakest of the plastics and would break down quickly in the sun so most were replaced early in the vehicles life. No reproductions in this color are available for the dash pad or steering wheel.

If you are wondering what the color looked like it was very similar to the A/C vent in your picture.

Here is a thread with some pics

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=453996

Looks like your tach dash and tilt column were added on by a previous owner, nice options! Love the rear leaf spring option over the coil setup too, great truck!!! Your rear axle looks like a Dana 60, it has better gear availability compared to a HO72 which would have come with the coil rear setup. The HO72 is a stronger axle compared to the Dana 60 but has no replacement gears available and bearings if found are VERY expensive.
