Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

I've got a 68 c10 with a mild built 454 big block. I'm using factory lap belts right now but want more safety. This truck is a grocery getter not a track truck. It will probably never see a drag strip. My question is what kind of seat belts are you guys using in your trucks? I'm trying to avoid adding a roll cage due to more holes in the nice rust free cab. I love the look of 4 point racing harnesses but not sure how to safely mount them into my truck with a bench seat.

Any suggestions or ideas? Post pictures of what you guys are doing! The attached picture is what I'd love to end up with if possible. Thanks!

Without a back bar if you attach your shoulder straps to the floor they will become spine crushers, they need to attach to or wrap around a back bar, or at very least attach to some sort of supported structure at shoulder level behind you.

X2 on this. Only reason I haven't put a harness in my 64. Hope to have a cage in it by the end of 2016.

Dealing with a similar issue in my truck. Don't really have room for a bar in the cab, trying to figure out a solution.

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

Isn't there a plug covering the hole for the 3 point belts in all 67-72 trucks?
Won't a 3 point belt setup like in every car for the last 30 years suffice for the grocery getter?

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

Create a bolt in structure using the shoulder bolt holes and bolt holes in the floor?

^^x3

Also remember that the bar(s) need to be padded if they are anywhere near your head. Just imagine what it would be like to be rearended and have your head smack that steal bar.

If you go with racing driver restraints, make sure they are DOT compliant. The police in many areas are citing people with aftermarket belts that don't have FMVSS tags.

This is a Cali thing for the most part haha. I agree with you, but there are only a few places in the country where I've met police that know, can tell, and enforce the more enthusiast-oriented laws. Both to their credit, and their detriment.

I'll add that IIRC there are a few harnesses/belts/systems which are race legal, but not DOT legal.
You'll find plenty of cheap "just for looks" belts.
You'll find plenty of race-legal belts which aren't Nhra/SFI or DOT
You'll find a few race legal belts with all the sanctioning
You'll find a handful of good fully endorsed belts, and you'll pay for them.

I'm a big fan of buying used high end safety stuff, especially if your just using it for regular things, or in amateur competition where "current" gear is allowed provided its in working order. You won't pay much, and you know it might actually do something if you relied on it.

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

I get updates from customers who drive through or live near urban areas (it's happening more and more), particularly with agencies that regularly conduct sobriety, immigration or safety checkpoints. Here are the driver restraints I did for Brett on this forum (Duramax-powered C10) for his truck that are also DOT compliant.

You have the legal right to refuse all of these, just be prepared to get f*cked with.

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

CHASSISWORKS makes this is a rear mount shoulder harness bar. Bolt on or weld in are avail.

Also for the lap belts and crotch to make them true 5 point if you want. there are these seat belt bosses that can be welded into place that take all the bolt hardware that comes with belts:

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

question on a 64 c10 can't you add a steel bar just below the window? like where the gas tank would be? it is below shoulder height but only like 2-6 inches I think, i'll have to check!

I'm wanting to add 4 point harnesses in my truck and I just bought buddy bucket seats, pic 1) shows bucket seat with 4 point harness! pic 2) has a bar above the seat but I can't find a good pic of the bar

Re: Racing Harness in Prostreet Truck

I don't remember what the dimension is but NHRA specifies a maximum distance below the drivers shoulders that the attachment point of the harness can be.

For autocross the NHRA rules dont matter one bit..... Typically SCCA rules will be in place for road-racing. Rules for roll bars and cages vary by sanctioning bodies.
