Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

I just picked up a set of plastic mounting nuts for my headlights and grill for my 79. Got them from classic parts of America. Nothing fits. Any recommendations? Can I get this from the local autozone or something like that?

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

Don't laugh but Lowe's may have them in their nuts and bolts sections with Automotive fasteners. I have picked up odd and ends for my truck and my Chevelle from there over the past couple years.

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

Went to lowes. And no luck. The ones they have did not fit. And the grill clips are the narrow long ones that slide into the front bracket. Any other ideas?

https://www.auveco.com/

Is the brand we use for all our fastener needs in my shop. Very few items they don't reproduce across all manufactures. Can probably google a place around you that is a supplier for them. Or perhaps a Fastenal is close to you.

I do have a fastenal just around the corner from the house. Can they look these parts up by vehicle? Or do I need specific part number?

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

For my '86, I found them at NAPA. IIRC, they are two different sizes. The ones for the grille were bigger than the ones for the headlight bezels. Google thread cutting nuts

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

I am pretty sure the ones he is looking for are for the 1980 and earlier trucks. I believe the NAPA ones people are talking about are for the 81 and newer grilles

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

These are the clips I got

http://www.classicparts.com/1973-78-...ctinfo/61-981/

Look at the left pic on the LMC catalog below. The brackets are unavailable, but you can see the slot the plastic tab goes in. Is this correct?

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/full.aspx?Page=41

Thanks

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

I would call them, they may have just sent the wrong clips. When it comes to clips & screws, 75% of the time, the wrong parts gets sent. But then again, I'm dealing with LMC. But I like their illustrations. Classic Parts, at least, has knowledgeable people that answer the phones.

I have an 86, so I'm sorry I can't help more. I can remember that my grille & headlight mounting clips were squared. I went and looked in my stash, those clips you have, I have them marked as inpanel mounting clips.

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

Well I just talked to them and I kind of answered my own questions. One the grill mount is for 73-78, not 79. They do not offer one for the 79, will have to improvise. As for the headlight mounts. I bet $5 I was putting them in backwards. Will try again tonight.

Went home for lunch and they do not fit. I will just have to shop around until I find them. Stay tuned

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

If I remember correctly, Dad's 77 used grille mounting nuts that look like this --> http://www.classicindustries.com/pro...s/6271829.html CI claims they're the same for 73-80.

On the 77, the headlight bezels used spring steel U-nuts like these --> http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Spr...e_p/a10065.htm I think the 79 bezels still mount the same even though they extend down around the parking / turn signal lights.

Re: Headlight and grill plastic mounting nuts

I will check out those grill clips. As for the metal screw tabs. I have larger Maybe 3/8" square holes for the headlight clips. I want to try to find something that fits properly. Designed to have a plastic clip plugged in the hole
