Gas tank size question.

Hi guys,

So I know the stock tank is ~20 gallons. I am looking to put one under the bed and really don't want to use the Blazer tank, as I think it hangs down too far and you need to mod (from what I have seen) the one crossmember in the bed.

I found another tank that I think will work very well but it's only 17 gallons. Do you think losing 3 gallons is really a big deal? Thoughts, comments???

This is the tank,

Re: Gas tank size question.

The behind-the-seat tanks are 19 gallons, blazer tanks are 21 I believe. I guess it all depends on what you use your truck for. If it's a daily driver with a short commute, or a show truck, then this tank will be fine. If your driving cross country then you might miss the other couple gallons. I am at this stage myself. This tank has got me interested, let me know how it works out if you choose to go with it.

Re: Gas tank size question.

So, you lose 2 gallons of capacity, at 10 mpg, that sounds like 20 miles of range to me. I don't think that would be a deal-breaker for me.

Re: Gas tank size question.

I wouldn't mind losing 2 gallons if it fits nicely. I'm in the same situation so if you plan on putting her in let us know how it goes.

Re: Gas tank size question.

Thanks for the opinions. I am really leaning this way. I am going to take a few measurements tonight.

Few things I like about this, one it's baffled, two, it takes most all aftermarket fuel senders (which I am using Autometer) and three, if I decide to go EFI, I can order the in tank pump with reservoir tray.

Add that it comes with universal straps and a fuel inlet hose, seems like a good deal at $215.

If I go this way, I will definitely post up pics and info.

Re: Gas tank size question.

I have a 15 gallon Jeep tank under mine. I get 12-13 MPG. I usually run about 150 miles before fillup again. Its not a daily driver so it dosen't bug me.

Re: Gas tank size question.

If you drive a lot like I do, you'll miss the extra volume. I've seen specs for the tank at 20.5 gal. and I've actually put 20.6 into mine when it was totally empty.
I even use one of my saddle tanks for extra range.
If you just use it occasionally and never for long trips, I guess you wouldn't notice as much.

Re: Gas tank size question.

By the way. Do waht the old Nascar guys did when they went to smaller fuel tanks. They ran about ten extra feet of filler hose to make up the difference. Until they got caught.

Re: Gas tank size question.

Well, after measuring, it looks like I'll need to move the rear most crossmember back about 4" and remove the spare tire crossmember (which I was going to do regardless), it should fit up with no problems.

I went ahead and ordered this tank today and should have it within a couple week. I'll post up once I get it and fit it up.

Re: Gas tank size question.

i'm lucky.....1/2 ton suburbans have a 20.5 gal tank and the 3/4 ton burbs got a 23.5 gal tank. the extra 3 gallons will make a difference when i re-gear the axle from a 4.57 to a 4.10 and install the rare overdrive unit behind my saginaw 3OT!

Re: Gas tank size question.

I'm currently researching fuel tanks as well. I want to relocate my tank under the bed and do not want it to hang down far enough to be seen below the bumper.

Re: Gas tank size question.

I run a 16 gallon tank. Seems like no big deal to me.

I decided to go with the universal 16 gallon tank from tanks inc. The size is pretty close to fitting in between the 2 cross members on the short bed trucks. I only had to trim about 1/4"-1/2" on each side of the lower frame rail for it to go in. Here is a couple pics of it. Still haven't gotten it totally installed yet. Still trying to decide to paint the tank black or go with the same color as the body with polished stainless straps. Not really sure how much of he tank is going to be visible when it's all done.
