I would check Craigslist or salvage yards. If you can be patient, you should be able to get a stock intake or even a used Edelbrock or Holley for not a lot of money. I bought a used Edelbrock from a guy off CL for $35.

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
Here's a thought, however.
The difference in power between a 2bbl and a 4bbl on a base 350 is 5 horsepower. They're rated at 250 with the 2bbl and 255 2ith the Q-jet. On the bigger 396 2bbl engines its tapped out at 265hp. So, if your engine isn't making more than 265hp, the 2-bbl is already plenty!

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
Here's another thought ... the camshaft is likely for a 1 barrel. Therefore the engine will not make use of larger carb and 4-bbl intake.

Please show pictures of the one barrel carb on your 283 small block.
( Just because it has one round hole on top doesn't make it a 1 barrel. I'd bet dollars to donuts that you have a two barrel Rochester ) |

no matter what you have. Summit has good cheap intakes under their brand. I got free edelbrock 1406 and put it on a summit intake and it woke up my 307. Of course the factory two barrel was in terrible shape though

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
Best running, most reliable, coldest-starting pre-fuel-injection vehicles I have ever owned where the Rochester (2GV?) 2-bbl carbs.
The -best- cold-start vehicle I've seen to date was a tie, but one of them was a 307 '68 GMC with a manual choke. The compression was low so maybe they crank faster in the cold too, but it always lit off in -40F. My '75 Monte 2bbl cold-started, not plugged in, at -44F, the coldest I've seen (wind chill doesn't affect metal once its ambient). The only reason I plugged it in was that the oil is like lard and its hard on them in that temperature! Do I sound oddly fond of 2 barrels for a guy that no longer owns any?

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
Totally agree, The rochester 2bbl carbs are some of the best running and easiest to tune carbs around. I have never heard of a 1 barrel carb on a v8.
If you are looking for more performance I would look for a good used 350 with a 4bbl intake/ cam already installed.

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
Just buy a used factory 4bbl intake. The 4bbl gets better mileage than the 2bbl on a small block, unless you run with secondaries open all the time. Consider the primary CFM compared to the full-time CFM of the 2bbl. Don't get too much carb for the motor and it will give the best mileage and power...when you need it

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
there are small base rochesters and large base rochesters, the small base is around 290cfm, the large base comes in 353cfm 380cfm 425cfm and 435cfm, so if you get a large base intake that 283 should really wake up, a Canadian truck 2bbl intake flows the best, it was used on street stock nascars for years

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
GM did use 1 barrels on the early SB in the bigger trks. they were like 165 hp but had a lot of low end torque. There are acouple over at the yard across the street. the small 2 bbl is about 20 hp more. the moter in my 63 is a 66 chevelle 2 bbl. rated at 195 hp. that's got the small 2bll. on it. I'm alittle shy on fuel around 4500 in high gear. If I was lookin for a little more I think I would go to the 1 1/2 inch flange 1 11/16 bore 2 bll. which flows around 425 cfm. up from the 300 I'm getten now. or probably the quadjet.

Certain Chevy cars also came so equipped. The 1-bbl 283 set up was very common in Checker Cabs too.

Re: best/cheapest 4 barrel intake 283
I have a stock 283 4 barrel with the oil filler tube and the tab for the spring. It is in nice condition. $75.00, but the shipping would probably be a lot from here in Indiana
