cad 500 into suburban
hey all: I'm looking to put a CAD 500 and th400 into a suburban. Still trying to get the right suburban I have a couple of questions though. (1) Do I have to get an adapter to use a chev TH400, or can I use a B.O.P TH400? (2) Do I have to use an ELDO oil pan? However, I found the caddy I want the the local wrecker, this guy wants to sell the whole car. It's a '70 ELDO. From what I hear it's the best one with 10:1 compression an d small chamber heads. But on the down side, the giudes must be changed and premium pump gas must be used. Does anyone know of any other possible problems I might run into doing this swap?
Thanks, Curley |

Personally, i would go for a later engine. You'll get teh HEI and all the parts needed for it, and I am very fond of the cheap gas...esp with the prices these days. (asuming your rig will be some what of a saily driver)
I would say screw your chevy tranny and get a BOP one. The adapter would add to the total length of the engine as measured from fan to tranny, and even though it isn't much, space is not something you have to spare with this monster. I used an eldo pan on mine, but that's just becouse that's what the engine had on it. I couldn't tell you if another would work better, but I can't imagine a mid sump or front sump working better since these trucks were designed for the rear sump. Something to look into, try to snag the oil filter housing/pump assembly (externally mounted up front on passenger side) off of a later 425. Theses take up less room and do not require you to chop up the front cross member like the 472/500 parts do. |

cad 500 into burb
Thanks guys for the sugestions. I pmd Longhorn man and he has helped me a lot. The biggest help was to ID a 500 from a 472 which is very difficult with the engine assembled. The difference is the stoke, he told me to use a wire in a plug hole and make 2 marks, one at BDC and one at TDC if 4" then a 472 if 41/3-41/2 then a 500. The morons at the local wrecking yards call them all 500's. I would be pissed when I get the motor and a re-ring kit and find out I have the wrong motor
So, about the tranny, good I found a BOP TH400 that I can get cheap and rebuild(junk yard). For now still waiting to find the beast to put it in. curley |
