Cool 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

anybody have installed aftermarket fender flares on their 60-66 chev/gmc truck?

where did you find them? searching the usual places, yeilds nothing specifically stating they'll fit our trucks! hard to believe!

I'd love to have a pic thread of what you've done specifically with fender flares.

I'm at the point where I need them, and would love to see the options out there, stories of what you had to do to make em work, so post up!

I'll post a pic of my truck as it is currently, and a couple pics of the kind of fender flares I'd love to get my hands on, but pics and stories of all kinds are greatly appreciated!

The two lower pics look like the universal rubber fender flairs. A quick Google search found this. Lots of places sell similar stuff.

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

hey thanks for the reply Chevy_Mike!

I too have found plenty of sites via searches mentioning this or that company who makes 'custom' or 'generic' fender flares for our trucks, but when I go to those sites, and choose a 60-66 chev/gmc truck/suburban I get nothing to indicate the products they're selling will actually fit our trucks, let alone worth the time money and effort...

I am spoiled by LMC having just about everything...

anyway, its why I'm looking for specific examples from the community as to what they've bought and installed, and/or custom made. I'd rather benefit from the experience of the membership here, than blaze my own consumer trail, if you get my drift...

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

What about c-60 front fenders and wider rear fenders Ala fiberglass replacements or metal work. But the universal ones work... look like after thought. Just note about making them from fiberglass, they will get tore up from rocks and heavy mud.

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

so yall think those flares in the last two pics I posted, are the generic/universal kind?

thanks for chevy_mike, posting that link/pic as it got me searching more directly on those Pacer Performance flexy flares, that all the generic auto parts sites seem to carry. Got some more info. They have about 2 different styles. with 2 different widths per style...

I really like the Pacer flare look, moreso than the typical bushwaker style, or late model oem styles...

I have considered doing fibreglass/bondo work on the fenders, but I'm not a very good bodyman, and yeah, I'd still have to protect that bodywork somehow... the body work I did on my doors only lasted a couple years, due to the front wheels throwing mud/rocks etc directly into the bottom corner of the doors...

If I'd have considered this fender flare business years ago, I bet that bodywork would still be there tho!

I wonder if you use one off the big boy trucks and modify it.
Some one done that on here or posted a pic of one. The rear stepsides were flared af well.

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

WOW!

the big chev fender flares would be wicked! I'll keep my eyes out in the farmyards around here, maybe I'll get lucky...

until then, I've sourced and ordered and recieved via the wonders of amazon, a set of the Pacer heavy duty flexy 2/5" x 58" flares. came in a set to cover all 4 wheel wells for under 80 bucks to my door.

I've attached a pic.

My rear stepside fenders are stock, so these flares will bolt on no problemo. However my front is another story. The entire front hood/grille/fenders are a single front flip fibreglass hood. I didn't install it, but it was on the truck when I bought it. Not my first choice, but it has it's advantages...

anyway, the wheel openings are basically flat. So I'm going to have to come up with a way to perhaps bolt pieces of angle iron or L brackets, to match each screw hole on the fender flares, so there's something to bolt them to...

a bit of an annoyance, having to fab up those brackets, but what the heck! I'm hoping I can get them installed this weekend, so I'll post up again, with some install pics, etc...

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

well, I didn't get time to install the fender flares this weekend.

ended up fabbing some rear mudflaps to keep my camper from getting rock damage, and swapping in a new set of warn locking hubs and a new passenger side tie rod & front suspension lube...

as I was installing the mudflaps I noticed my stepside box is no longer on straight!
it sits more to the passenger side by about a half inch, maybe more... not really sure how I'm gonna fix that... prolly have to pull the bed off & cut the old mounts off, and weld on new ones? sheesh!

there's always something, gettin in the way of the things I'd rather be doing to my truck!

next up is a "redneck front alignment", and then I can move onto the flares...

If you loosen up the bed to frame mounting bolts you should be able to align your bed.

I had thought there wouldn't be enough play there, but here's to hoping the fix to that problem will be that easy!

thanks CaptainFab! and to everyone else on this board, I love it!

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

well, it has been awhile folks, but I've finally begun the pacer fender flare installation... on the rear. the front is what I need to ask y'all about ...

anyway, on the rear, it's easy peasy... they bolt right onto the lip of the fender. I did not use the junk sheet metal screws they provide, instead using 7/16 hardware and washers/lock washers to secure the flares in place. I did use their spacing for the hardware...

it does not and cannot end up as a picture perfect install, as these are rubber. so unless you fabbed up some metal bar stock, following the inner fender contour, that your hardware bolts up against -- the rubber will compress and deform under normal bolt torque...

here's a couple pics:

Re: 60-66 chev/gmc truck fender flares ???

I dig the look of em, and figure they will withstand the trail abuse I give them, moreso than those pretty looking but brittle bushwaker style plastic flares... a little black silicone bead run along the top will lessen the visual warbling effect of the installation hardware...

The front however -- in every picture of the 64-66 trucks, the front fenders look different. They all look like they have no lip underneath like the rear does...

so how does one mount those flat pacer fender flares, when there is nothing to mount to?

I've never seen any close up pics of what front inner fenders really look like, but for me, my hood is a fibreglass flip front -- and my inner fenders are bolted between the firewall and the rad support, and are not something I can mount flares to...

The flares must be mounted to the hood, but unless I come up with some method of providing a flat surface to screw into, I cannot mount the flat style of flare...

Anybody feel like chiming in, on how they installed their fender flares???
