exhaust cutout valve?
i am putting new headers and exhaust on my 72 C20. 402 big block. i am installing after market headers and with dual exhaust
first question: what are the pros and cons of using a exhaust cutout valve? second if i do get a new one should i go factory or remote ? here is a pick of the old one |

I would go remote as they limit the amount of torque put on the cutout when closing. I have ruined a few of them just holding the switch just a lil too long on closing.

Friend ran a qtp cutout for around 2 years. Never had any issues with using a switch. I bought some cheap ones off ebay and we'll see how well it works.

What you are showing is a heat riser valve. When the exhaust heats up the spring expands and opens the valve. This is not an exhaust cutout.

Heat riser is an emission thing. Flap closed while engine cold. Exhaust would then be partially diverted up through the exhaust crossover in the intake manifold, thus heating up the intake faster for better fuel atomization. Once the engine warmed up to operating temp the flap would open. Why you want this on a header is up for question

Follow up question, since my truck doesn't have the emissions junk, has the ram horn manifold, Holly carb, and I want to redo the exhaust, removing this should be okay?

keep the rams horn manifolds and run new 2 1/4 inch exhaust back from them (assuming its a stockish small block )

He has a BB. I would follow his advice still unless those manifolds are horrible. I run headers only because that is what fits my heads (D ports). If you want some better flow look into Sanderson's as they are cast iron. This eliminates all the headaches of bad sealing, leaks, scratched coatings, or rusting out. My coated headers have a good amount of rust after 2 years and they are coated and had the proper break in procedure.
