Anyone dyed seat belts before?

I've got 3 full sets of 3 point retractable belts but they are grey, we are needing black( at 139 a set for new ones,it could be a good cost savings if can be done)--anyone tried it? Found an Acid ( vinegar ) set dye that is supposed to work well, made by Jacquard. Looks promising, and the seatbelts are out of a newer model wrecked expedition--no way I'd do this on 40 year old belts.

I don't know, the thought of that dye coming off onto clothes could eliminate any saving and leave you with useless seatbelt probably better of spending the money and buying proper black belts. Just my $.02

I have used the sem 15016 black dye on seats, seat belts, door panels and other various trim pieces with no issues. just make sure you prep the pieces well and it shouldn't come off. I also use adhesion promoter on the plastic pieces.

Total waste of time and money ! You can not dye nylon it's a sealed fiber it does not absorb another color and spraying adhesion promoter on them is just a temporary fix , Buy the correct color and don't ever risk your own personal safety on seat belts ...Bad idea ! Sell the belts you have and buy new correct belts , sometimes trying to save a buck is just totally wrong !

Re: Anyone dyed seat belts before?

The sem stuff is not a dye its a type of paint it specifically calls out for use on carpets which if I am not mistaken is nylon as well. I have had great results with it.

Just to clarify I would never use seat belts that had rips tears or any damage or are 40 years old. I also don't use adhesion promoter on the fabric just on plastic pieces.

Yes I have , and agree with Grumpy , waste of time , while Ive had good success with door panels and some other various vinyl interior pieces , doing proper prep and using sem vinyl dye , seat belts came out looking like hillarys face

I raced circle track for years, no way I'd even think about old belt, your actually supposed to replace them every 5 years but no one does that
Race belts are dated and they check the date in your safety inspection.
Sorry didn't mean to start an argument guys

Speaking of safety, UPS just delivered our bladder, foam filled, rollover valve, fuel cells about 10 minutes ago--just a cell phone pic.

Re: Anyone dyed seat belts before?

To answer your question; Yes it can be done as Oldblue68chevy stated. I too have had success in the past using this product.

Re: Anyone dyed seat belts before?

I agree, I can be done. Did mine several years ago, we're originally green. Black shouldn't be a problem. Sorry, not a great pic of them.

Re: Anyone dyed seat belts before?

Thanks, they look pretty good in that pic to me. I'll save them out of the expedition before taking it to the crusher, still looking at it to see what else I can salvage off of it besides the seats and console.
