The long water pump Alt bracket bolts on the passenger side of the engine. Usually attaches to the water pump and intake manifold. With these brakets the alt seats closer to the middle/ front of the engine. The short water pump brackets usually attaches to the drivers side of the motor. The brackets attach to the engine block and the right side of the water pump.

This is a pic of a long water pump alt set up.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I believe a long waterpump is about 7 1/4 inches from the front of the block to the pulley and a short waterpump is 5 3/4 inches from the front of the block to the pulley.
