Insurance Advice Needed
I am in a quandary on what to do about insurance on my 1972 C10 - what do you guys do? I am using Grundy's Classic Vehicle Insurance with a predetermined value. This has many limitations, miles per year, can only drive the truck to car show or function. I called my Liberty Mutual agent and he said that he would cover it but it would have a 1972 value, so if I had an accident, they would probably total my truck with a street value of $300 or a little more.
What do you guys do? I want to be covered for the classic amount and be able to drive it all I want. Is there a better solution to what I am doing now? Thanks KellerMac

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I've been lightly browsing around lately as well and it looks as if this company has agreed value as well as an unlimited mileage option. That's what the quote form showed anyways.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I went thru this same dilemma last year. I ended up going with American Collector insurance.
You can do the quote online and choose a value and all your coverage options. They even have policies which allow you to drive ANYWHERE. Not this bs everyone else about where you can take it. I opted for the "drive anywhere" policy. Only had it since August but no complaints yet. I insure my c10 and k10 thru them. Cost me under $300 a year for both combined. Edit to add: they were super easy about everything. They want pics of the vehicles and for trucks they want to see the bed to prove you aren't hauling stuff and it's actually a collector vehicle. I had one of my trucks on my lift and couldn't get to it for pics and they didn't care. |

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
Read the fine print. The policies I've seen require an insured modern vehicle as a daily driver and some type of secure garage storage.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
Yes it's limited to 7,500 and you must have a daily driver.
I don't know if a locked garage is required. |

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I use hagerty and was able to set my value on it. They have plans for different mileage driven. I think you still have to have a daily driver though. Might be worth a look.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I have Grundy. I'm happy with them. Had an accident at CTC year before last. Someone hit my truck parked and had no insurance. Within 7 days had a check in my hand for all the damage.
Mileage really isn't a big deal to me. I only use the trucks to drive to club meets and shows.

How about us guys that have a nice truck that we actually use? I was all set with Hagarty until they saw the plow frame hanging off the front of it...

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I don't have a show truck, but was able to set a value for the truck as my daily driver with State Farm. Pay roughly $100/month. Copied from my policy:
AUTOMOBILE LIABILITY 50/100/50 NO FAULT/PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION P10 EMERGENCY ROAD SERVICE UNINSURED MOTOR VEHICLE 10/20 |

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I have State Farm regular car insurance. They valued my 72 C20 at $12,500. I'm pretty sure my insurance agent said that would be about the payout if the truck was totaled or stolen. I need to call next week and re-verify.
I pay $28 per month for an antique policy. Not supposed to drive it much. It was $69 per month under a regular policy. I may switch back so I don't have any problems since I do drive more than I technically should.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
Make sure you look for an "Agreed Value" policy.
I also use Grundy and had a claim on my 69 Camaro about 10 years ago when a Ford truck ran into the back of me. I too had a check within about a week. ![]()

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I have Allstate, just regular car insurance, no limits on driving. They recently paid a $7500 claim after I hit a deer in my 72 K1500. It took a month to get an appraiser to look at my truck but finally paid off telling me it wouldn't take so long if it happens again, they even paid my deductible as compensation for the long wait.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
Hagerty all the way.
Agreed upon value, no mileage limits. I just needed proof that is was it was garaged.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
I had agreed value of $40k on my Chevelle and paid just under $370 a year with Hagerty. With my renewal up in late February, I asked about pushing my renewal date to mid April since there are no classic car shows/events here til May. I was told I would have to go through the whole application process and reapply for coverage. As a result I told Hagerty I'll be shopping for a new insurance provider then. Good thing I did! Grundy quoted me $250 a year for the same coverage.

I also went with American Collector. My truck is a garage queen and driven occasionally to the store or work so limited mileage isn't a big deal to me.

Re: Insurance Advice Needed
By advice of some board members I went with Hagerty a month ago. Don't waste your time with common insurers, AAA couldn't even tell me what my truck is covered for. I insured mine for 20K and it's in pieces. Increases 1K every qtr. Cost less than what I was paying AAA. Somewhere around $230 annually.
