Re: reproduction step bumper?

If you sandblast and paint an old straight one, like most are, and paint it will look brand new. If you could find a place that can bend C-channel it would be easy to make one

We don't know where you are, but here's a period aftermarket bumper on the Phoenix Craigslist.

Re: reproduction step bumper?

The hitch added defeats the purpose of the drop-down bumper.

Re: reproduction step bumper?

Nice to know. Got a link? K/5s didn't come with step bumpers, so not sure what you are saying or how this relates to the thread.

Up through '71 GM optinal step bumpers were what I was taling about, since that's original to your truck. They were 4" C-channel with formed curves at ends and tag/hitch inset in the center and diamond plate welded on top. I don't seem to have a picture on my computer. Most go with the standard bumper for a sleeker look and less function. My '72 GMC has the Bartens (aftermarket) bumper that is made pretty much the same, but expends along the side

'72 had the coolest one year only stamped steel step bumpers. Not nearly as strong as the prior ones, but same construction as what came to follow, only far better looking, being 4" and far more functional. After '72 the bumpers went to 8" wide which all but eliminated the "step" feature with tailgate down and adding 4 more inches to step up

See how both drop the top of the bumper lower for a shorter step and room for a boot under an open tailgate. in '73 when they went to 8" the bumper is crowded to the bottom of the tailgate

I never said thanks for this info special-k... Thank you! Very informative. Another member reached out to me and offered a free 72 step, even has the light housings intact and in great shape.

Smile Re: reproduction step bumper?

This was on my 71, I believe it was period correct, I wanted to keep this bumper have all the little dings and such removed, stripped and chromed but the expense was huge. Estimates over $1000 so it will have to wait.

Re: reproduction step bumper?

Here's mine.
My truck has the camper equipment, and it's made to be adjusted out another 2 feet to clear a camper.
Not sure if this is aftermarket or not.
