What to do about this rust?

I am about to reassemble my front end but I have some rust there yet....I'm not able to do a frame off and I cannot do my own media blasting or even painting.

I was just going to reassemble my newly painted replacement parts (all NOS or OEM) but should I get rid of this old rust first?

This is the driver's side front fender, it's good overall but has some rust where parts meet. What should I do? How should I do it?

I would use a wire brush on my drill and clean it up, then either a good self-etching primer or Por-15.

These two products work well. they convert the rust via chemical reaction and rust turns to neutral black finish that is paintable.
Locktite also makes a version of this, some of these are available at Walmart.
I use this around the house, anywhere you have rust.

You could also go one more step and paint ....for extra protection.

And there's always biodegradable, non-toxic Evaporust which works excellent, although not good for large items unless you have a swimming pool full of the stuff to soak it in.

I've tried "painting on" Evaporust without much luck. What about naval jelly? I've never tried it, but it converts rust to something inert and purple that you can paint over. At least if you can't reach the area well enough to wire-wheel, prime, etc.

If it's in a hidden area, you could POR-15 it and top-coat that, couldn't you? I've never topcoated POR-15, but presume it can be done.

Jasco Prep and Prime works well on the rust too, (phosphoric acid)but is kind of nasty.
I've top-coated Por-15, turned out nice because it is really good at self-leveling if applied properly. Just make sure it is cured correctly as well.

That's probably the most cost-effective advice. I have a fondness for NAPA's Rust Treatment and have wire brushes.....I think I'll do that.

Clean what rust I can off and Permatex the rest and paint over. Of course, a frame-off is what the truck needs!
