1968 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4

Picked up this truck almost a month ago. Was a factory long step with v6 and 4 speed. Truck was bought new by the MoHave Electric Company in Kingman Arizona and placed in service April 25, 1968. The PO brought it from Bullhead City to Kansas city around 20-25 years ago. It's not a optioned truck but it does have the no-spin rear axle and gm spot light. It also came with the stock 16" 2 piece wheels.

Long steppers are cool but I forgot to add an important piece of info. The PO extended the frame 12" in front of the axle and 4" behind for a flat bed. With that in mind we decided that it would not hurt to cut it down to a short bed. And being we have a pair of NOS accessory bed steps we decided that we would put a short feet on it. So we will end up with a short fleet 3/4 ton 4x4

Thanks. I also like the spotlight and you don't see many 67-72 trucks with them.

We are going to put the v6 in our 66 3/4 ton 4x4 and put a 292 in it.

that orange color is typical of the color state DOT painted thier trucks back them. it was common through the 50's up until at least 1968

Very cool old GMC! Since the frame has been cut anyway it's a good candidate for a shortbox project. I dig the V-6 too, glad it's going to get planted in a truck that needs it. From what I've read, the 292 are great engines. I only have experience with 230's and 250's. They are darn good engines too.

My '72 GMC had this spotlight in it already when we bought it in 1979. I have no idea if it was dealer installed. Looks similar to your setup.

Thanks and it is a good candidate for a short box. I've also thought about a crew cab build but that would take lots of time and we have other projects to finish first. The 6 cylinders are great engines. The 292 we have only has 55,000 miles and should work great in a 4x4. The v6 will go to good use. The spot light on your truck looks just like ours.
