is it worth it???

I just found a 99K big block 78 Sierra... brown/tan with a tan gut, 454, TH400, air (works), tilt, cruise pw,pl, am.fm (factory), delay wipers, sliding glass, dual tanks and tow package... sticker was gone fromt he glove box, but everything works cept the cruise but the harness is untouched, and all mechanicals are there... the orginal quad is still on it with charcoal canister and all that stuff... air is hood up and working... interior is dirty, but complete.. new windshield glass... hmmmmm thats bout it... the truck drives out nice, brakes well, quiet etc. guy is asking 1,500, may get it for 13... my 74 c10 has a mint body and frame and thought about combining the two... save for the windows and locks... worth it??? lemme know... ohhh and its a heavy half too, but no posi, 373 gears me thinks but no tach to tell...

I am assuming the body is shot?

I still think is is well worth it...I say go for it! Does this mean I get your 250 then?

Can I also look over the parts you don't need/want and see if there is anything I can buy from ya?

yeah i was waitng for a comment Jeff ... but yeah then the 250 would go, but it may be a little while... still gotta decide if i wanna buy that thing.. yeah the body is pretty shot, but i would be swaping everything over to my 74 body and frame... so 1300-1500 is a good deal??? then yes i would sell off the parts that I wouldnt need for sure to recouple some of the cash id spend on her.... keep the opinions comin!!!!

I have seen complete pw/pl setups go for over $200 on e-bay...so you could recoup some money selling parts you don't need.

BTW - how is the hood? Dents/rust, kinks? I need a clean one pretty bad but do not want to spend a ton of $$ at this time.

MIKE, $1500! absolutely not - you should sell it to me
seriously i know that you know your way around an engine ,small blocks anyway, but listen the STOCK big blocks closely, especially cold. they had a poor design cast piston with metal inserts near the pins that would crack. Listen for those cracked piston skirts. NYUG,NYUG ,NYUG down deep inside at an idle and if you rap the throttle you'll hear them clatter as the engine deccelerates.. DAVE

Well, i did the comp and vac test... the number 5 hole dropped compression rather quickly from 100, and the number 8 hole only had 30 psi, and i could feel it in the exhaust.... vac bounced from 15-17 Hg on the gauge at idle, but i did notice some seriously cracked vac lines too... the guy would nto budge off of 1500, even got to be a smart ass about it by sayin "well you dont have to buy it"... Dave, i couldnt tell about the noise you were talkin about, and it was chilly starting it up... The truck body is not in that great of shape, and the interior is tan and dirty, the cruise was not hooked up at teh carb and thats why it didnt work, I used a mighty vac on the canister and it held vaccum... the oil pressure gauge read over 30 psi all the time... hmmmm thats about it... he wontbe around till tuesday, so i said id give hima call then... who knows... keep em opinions comin and I appreciate all the great input...

IMHAO I think the truck is still worth what he wants but only as a resto project for YOU and not as a buy&sell money maker or buy for the motor & options piece ,because, it sounds pretty obvious that the engine needs a rebuild at min. I think as a resto project that these trucks with factory BB power and a lot of options are going to up swiftly in price because musclecars are going nuts. I think trucks can still be done with a little less fussy of a resto, because if they are done with the same quality of resto as the musclecars are enjoying than you won't get the money back out of them. A friend of mine already has 38K wrapped up in a 67 Camaro resto and he did most work himself. DAVE
