I hate hail...

We got the biggest hail storm I had ever seen.

1-2" hail. It put dents in my A/C units, tore through brand new thick grille covers, destroyed the top of my camper, knocked a crapload of sand off my roof, and damaged the piss out of my C10's brand new trim. Luckily, the old girl appears to be mostly undamaged bodywise, there's a ripple or two, but for the most part, those may have already been there. It even broke a turn signal lens.

My wife's 2011 Mustang wasn't so lucky. It's destroyed. Every panel looks like a hammer was taken to it (roof, hood, trunk, fenders, doors, quarters, EVERYTHING!), the dents are so hard and deep that it cracked the paint on the hood and roof. She cried for two days. I'm guessing that's going to take 4-5K to fix.

Anyway, I took these about an hour and a half after it happened, so these had actually melted quite a bit. She said the yard looked like it had snowed 2". I was also very lucky my brand new $44K truck was still at work with me.

Re: I hate hail...

My sons and I stopped in Sturgis one year on a road trip. There was a car there that looked like it was beat up by a ballpeen hammer. I asked the guy ... Hail!

Re: I hate hail...

That is probably the storm we had, there was wall to wall TV coverage on the storm for like 6 hours in a row there was grape fruit sized hail indicated by the Doppler radar. Jim

Re: I hate hail...

Unfortunately, my home gets hit by at least one hail storm every year, but it's usually little pea sized stuff that doesn't damage much. I don't know how they're going to fix my wifes car. I'm positive the flimsy roof panel needs to be cut out and replaced. The hood is so damaged it would be cheaper to be replaced (needs to be painted anyway, paint has cracked). Sigh... yes, exactly like a round ball peen hammer hit it everywhere.

What kinda sucks too is that it happened at like 6:10PM on her way home from work. If she had stayed at work 10 minutes later (she typically stays 20-30 mins late) she would have missed the storm, but she left right on time that day.

When my new truck is paid off, I'm building a shop. I'm counting down... I have about 2.5 more years... unless I can get the truck paid off earlier...

Re: I hate hail...

The metal polisher I took my outer grill to may be about to fix that. Let me know and I'll send you his phone number.

Modern cars cannot handle hail, my 2003 Civic was pummeled in 2006 by a freak hail storm here in WV. I was out in it, it was the most intense lightning I have ever seen, like a strobe light party, and the hail was so thick it was like a white out. The hail stones were small though.

It cost some $500.00 to get all the dents out.

With the size of those ice balls in your hand, I would think all your glass would be gone too.

Wow! More reason to use original sheet metal whenever possible.Your trim now looks like what is left of mine that's all beat to hell. Sucks that you just bought/ installed it.

Got a picture of the Mustang?

Re: I hate hail...

I drove thru the TX hail storm this morning around 6am in Fort Worth. No damage, but it sure reminded how lousy most drivers are. They were literally coming to a dead stop in the middle of a 3 lane expressway because they didn't know what to do. Ha. Luckily, was in an 01 Silverado, no dents or dings and no thin trim to dent up. Sorry about your damage, that is a bummer.

Not yet... The car is a deep blue and it's hard to get pics to come out.

Glad to see your truck made it out well! You think you could get any photos of the Mustang? Sounds rough.

Re: I hate hail...

I'll try today. The car is still worth about 12-14K to insurance, so no, it won't be totaled. I think my policy is 75 or 80% of estimated value.

Re: I hate hail...

Wow hate to hear that..does look like someone took a hammer to it...When me and my wife first got together she had this dodge daytona and it looked like that on one whole side of the car, but it wasn't hail damage it was kid damage her 2 small sons decided to take a hammer and chip the ice off the car, that thing looked like it had been shot with buckshot... sad thing was insurance would have had it fixed but she didn't know...

Re: I hate hail...

Find yourself a good pdr guy for the stang. Where the paint is cracked they'll have to repaint but a good pdr guy can do wonders and pop even the ones that need to be repainted to keep the filler down as much as possible. Our car was pounded 6 times in one summer and a friend of the families saved all our panels and made it look great. Hail sucks but better then a accident.

Re: I hate hail...

Wow, sorry to see all that damage. The building is a good idea for sure.
Somewhere in Iowa gets piss pounded with hail every year, we've had some nasty ones.
When the clouds roll in, I'm scampering to get everything inside. Been a real life saver. Good luck.

Re: I hate hail...

Man, I hated to read this thread 'cause I knew what it was gonna say. Rotten luck, for sure. We don't really ever get that kind of damaging hail. Once in a great while maybe.

My friend's dad, a farmer, bought a hail-damaged truck-I think it was a Nissan. A Frontier anyway, whoever makes those. He didn't care what it looked like, just a farm beater, but that poor old truck looked like it had pulled the ball picker-upper at the driving range for 30 years. It had dents inside of dents. 'Ol Jim loved it, though. He got it for next to nuthin'

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
